THE massive crowd at the MCG for Saturday's grand final has ensured that 2008 was the best attended season in the league's history.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou lauded the outstanding result on Monday and thanked all the fans around Australia who had supported the game.
"The 2008 season was given an emphatic exclamation mark on Saturday to conclude our year with a wonderful match between Hawthorn and Geelong in front of our biggest crowd at a grand final for more than two decades," Demetriou said.
"The AFL wishes to thank each and every single supporter across the country who made the effort to attend a match in person this year and to congratulate again the work of our 16 clubs in building their memberships to record levels.
"The AFL's commitment is always to maximise attendances at our matches and to be able to draw more than seven million fans through the gates for our year is a source of great pride for the game," he said
