Rushed behinds rule under review

Postby Hondo » Sun Sep 28, 2008 8:56 pm

It seems like, in the wake of the record rushed behinds this season culminating with Hawthorn doing it 10 times in the GF, that the rule for rushed behinds are going to be reviewed.

I have always felt that being able to so easily get out of defensive trouble and, for the small cost of 1 point, get possession back, doesn't seem right. Maybe 30 years ago it was OK but in today's structured game I think there's too much incentive to simply walk over the line and get a free kick, AND be able to play on immediately. Do it anywhere else on the field and it's a free kick to the other team.

What are other people's thoughts?

Brian Taylor said on Footy Show this morning - for deliberate rushed behind - no score, bounce 30m out.
Need to be careful, should be able to deliberately spoil a mark through the behinds

make it like deliberate out of bounds- with a free paid in the square.
or alternatively, they could just not tinker with the rules anymore than they do now.

Im happy how it is now to be honest. I dont see why we have to consistently play around with the rules.

They showed when they had the 3 point rule in the preseason cup that they cant get it right. Was paid when it shouldn't be and wasn't paid when it should.

why stuff around with the rules. maybe if teams did not lose posession near the goal front as often, there wouldn't be so many rushed behinds. there is no need to fix something that is not broken, plenty of other things that can be fixed before this.

Agreed, instead of a rule change coaches can just implement tactics/skills to avoid it happening.

Thanks RR.
Effing sick of Demetriou and his assorted dickheads effing up the game even more.
I'd like to see admins of sites like this(Bigfooty etc) start an online petition to prevent rule changes.
Maybe football fans can pressure clubs by threatening not to renew memberships if the AFL
keeps screwing around with the game.
Mmmmmm..... :-k

But that's the point here .... what can you do if the defender just decides it's all too hard and takes 2 steps backwards?

Every other rule forces players to commit to making a contest and gives the opponent a reward for taking away all their opponent's options.

Except this one .... a free white flag whenever the defender wants out of a pickle. Not one coach gives a rats toss bag about the 1 point penalty.

Have you even thought about this issue or just put up the "no rule changes" sign within 0.5 of a second on an angry principle?

Both.
I've been angry about the constant rule changing for at least 5 years.

Don't forget the ability of teams not to allow the team kicking out to get easy possessions and take it the length of the ground. Seriously teams will get better at stopping sides from the kick outs and then it will be a much bigger risk to rush it through. Coaches working out how to do this is what will fix the problem not changing the rules.

You realise that rules have been changing for as long as the game has been played?

As they have to because the coaches and players keep changing how the game is played

You have to have your head in the sand if you think rules from 2003 can just be locked away intact forever

Oh well, if no-one will listen to me, maybe they will listen to the Premiership Coach ..

How about the AFL rescinding ones of its rules - the play-on before the flag is waved. A few rushed behinds have always been part-and -parcel of the game, but there has been a plethora of them since this rule was introduced, and it is a blight on the game.

I wouldn't mind seeing a bounce 25m from goal for a deliberate rushed behind. Just don't change the scoring system.
