Learn from the Hawks.

Jason Dunstall was criticised for thinking more outside the square when appointing Allister Clarkson as coach of the Hawthorn F/C & not giving the job to a Hawthorn person.
A little pain created alot of gain & the club now has moved forward, it took 4 years for Clarksons first premiership in the AFL.
Some clubs do live in the past & Port Adelaide are definately one of them.
How long is it going to take Port to change its line of thinking similar to that of Hawthorn & get over the past of insisting a Port person must coach?
I think the Port Magpies should have a look at it aswell, alot of them are living in the past.

Port Adelaide Magpies did have a non port coach a few years back, he was a dud and it set us back 5 years. Only just recovering now.

Set you back 5 years my arse, if he was still coaching Port they'd have won a flag by now.
You have no idea pafc1870 as far as who can coach & who can't, one year isn't enough time to show your true colours & in that time Knights was coach he blooded alot of youngsters & isn't that what its all about seeing who can play & who can't? Oh but he only had one year to prove himself not like todays coaches that get 4-5 & still do f__K all.
Mate if you have a mirror at home have a real good look in it & tell me if you see CREED!

I am sick of you one eyed Port Adelaide supporters who can't see 3cm past their duffel coats! That dud coach your referring to had no chance with the lack of support and respect he was shown at your club, who by the way have done NO BETTER than he the past 2 years even WITH a club pet coaching. Who do you think got Depasquale and Elstone to the magpies, yeah those two players have put you back,NOT. How many more years are you going to blame that previous coach and how long are you going to live in the past! I suppose you still think you are buying fuel for 65 cents! Well done to the Hawks for looking outside their club FOR their club!

Now, I'm either retarded or just plain dumb, but Clarkson came from Port before heading to Hawthorn, but never actually played there, so actually Port has had a non-Port person coaching them.

I think only the minority will insist 100% that a Port person must coach. Personally, I'd prefer a Port person, but if the best candidate for the job is an outsider with fresh ideas, then lets have him. At the moment, that's not the case IMHO and long may Choco be a the helm.

Clarkson never had the main coaching role at Port though DA.

No, but he wasn't there for his pretty face.

I take your point, i just read your post "coaching them" as relating to the senior coach role. Cripps is there now, plus they've had others over the years from a non Port background as well eg. McGuinness

Yeah, I should have been clearer.

McGuiness.......not sure what your thoughts are on him being at Port when he was there, but mine aren't suitable for public viewing on this board.

Yeah, McGuinness is not a fan favourite, probably only has the job as the club weren't able to attract a better quality candidate from interstate.

And getting back to what was said above, I was actually very excited when Knights came to the club, thought he would be good for us. He did bring Dipper and Elstone to the club, which I have said before was a damn good thing, but when the season started it was evident his game plan was never going to work - crap negative style of play, and he lost the players as a result. From what I hear he lost the boards backing as well. Another year at the helm would have been a disaster. My comments about Knights time at the club have NOTHING to do with him not being a Port Adelaide man.

No Mercys comment about me not knowing anything about who can and cant coach (because I said something he didn't agree with) and pom poms comment abbout one eyed supporters not seeing 3cm past their duffel coats are disgraceful, though I wouldn't expect anything less from two people who would rather play the man than the ball.

When I saw this thread I thought the OP was going to suggest that the Power turn into bottom feeders for the next three seasons.
