Senate Inquiry into Tassie AFL team

Postby Squawk » Tue Sep 16, 2008 12:09 pm

Inquiry into matters relating to the establishment of an Australian Football League team for Tasmania

On 28 August 2008, the Senate referred the following matter to the Senate Standing Committee on Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport for inquiry and report by 30 June 2009:

whether the decision of the Australian Football League (AFL) Board of Commission to prioritise admission to its competition of teams from Western Sydney and the Gold Coast over a proposed team for Tasmania is fair and equitable;
the capacity of the State of Tasmania to sustain a team in the peak national Australian Rules Football competition;
the regional implications of the establishment of an AFL team in Tasmania for economic development;
whether the AFL commissioners' obligations to current supporters of the game override their desire to promote larger television audiences for it; and
other related matters.

The committee invites written submissions, which should be lodged by Monday, 1 December 2008. Further information is at: http://www.aph.gov.au/Senate/committee/rrat_ctte/afl_tasmania/index.htm

Should be interesting - especially this bit - whether the AFL commissioners' obligations to current supporters of the game override their desire to promote larger television audiences for it;

What juristiction does a senate enquiry have over a private entity? Can make recommendations but I can see Demitriou et al saying, "Well make us...."

Grandstanding...
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

It's a good question

I guess at some level the Govt can eventually make whatever law they want, however specific they want, and make it applicable to whoever they want

But whether they would interfere so directly is debateable I agree

Good to see the fight kicking on - personally I think bypassing a traditional football state in the pursuit of profits just isn't cricket!
In between signatures .....

Well, the Inquiry also includes "other related matters". How about everyone who wants to see state league replays on ABC send them a letter and point out the issues that this creates for other state league supporters? :lol:

That's actually a good idea. Hundreds of individual letters have more impact than one petition with hundreds of signatures, so all start writing.

They cannot even support a second-tier League side - instead they are folding up the Devils and trying to recreate a State League which will end in tears and a money vacuum. Didn't they learn last time?

Their day is gone now, hell it was never here to start with.

The monies the AFL get from the governments of this country is miniscule compared to the revenue from TV rights and corporate sponsorship.

Launceston (NTFL Premiers) were meant to play Glenorchy (STFL Premiers)
in the revived State Championship game last weekend.
I repeat 'were', as Launceston wouldn't fork out the $3500 for plane fares to Hobart for the game.
The ingrained rivalry (pettyness if you like) between the North & South Football leagues
will ensure that there will never be an AFL team out of Tassie.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.
