The Robert Harvey send off.....

Postby Booney » Mon Aug 25, 2008 9:13 am

What was with that?

St.Kilda play at the Dome next week against the Bombers.Essendon home game,I know, but really.....

Fergus Watts on the field to farewell Harvey as one of the players who played with Harvey.....

Adelaide giving him a guard of honour at the end of the game.....how funny,Adelaide may play the St's in two weeks time, will they do it again?

Harvey is a champion of the game,if you dont think so,you are wrong, but really when the bloke has at least 2 more games to play where will the fanfare end?

I guess being St kildas last "home" game it gave the supporters a chance to see him off, home crowds at the dome work pretty much the same as FP. However the precedent has been set after Sheeds' send off.

It is something that has crept into the game, and something I'm not all that keen on to be honest. Players announcing their retirements well in advance and having about 5-6 send offs. It's just like everything else in football, a marketing exercise.

Pretty soon we will get to the USA way of players announcing retirements at the start of their final season and getting a send off each time they play away. Too much.

I liked the old fashioned way of announcing retirement after you've played your final game, or maybe the Thursday night before your final game. Far less ostentatious.

Wasn't yesterdays game classified as his Testimonial game though? If so then fair enough that it gets some fanfare - although I don't personally like people who have made millions of $$ out of a sport having a testimonial as a last chance cash grab out of fans. Just as I don't like players selling raffle tickets etc to raise money for players trips (unless they want to pay some money toward my work christmas show in return).

The Gowans boys were there also, flew out yesterday morning. They apparently missed the Virgin Blue flight and had to buy seats on the QANTAS flight.

Pretty simple I would have thought. Prior to this weekends the game against crows, the Saints were no certainty to make the finals. Plus it was St Kilda last "Home" game, hence where the members and season ticket holders may have had their last chance to send him off. Lets be honest, he deserves everything he gets. I agree M Wilson may not deserve several send offs but an absolute champion such as R Harvey deserves as many as he can get, particularly from the St Kilda FC whom certainly havent done a real lot to thank him for his unbelievable career with their off field debacles of recent years.

Apples with apples mate.

Wilson announced his retirement, effective immediately,on the Thursday before we played a home game and he got a lap of honour around Footy Park.

Harvey announced his three weeks ago with the end of the Saints season being the end of his career.Yesterday was round 21,they will play finals and he gets a guard of honour...

Apples with apples? I think not.

not really, why not at Port last home game also?

Anyway I see where your coming from, I get particulalry annoyed at guys getting chaired off for 100/150 games

However cause it is Harvey and a future Legend of the game, Im happy for him to get the accolades he richly deserves....maybe the Crows guard of honour was over the top, should have been left for next week v Essendon

They play Essendon at the Dome next week.....you dont think they will be able to fit all the people in?

Essendon playing for nothing and the St's have a small supporter base, please.

So lets say it was M Wilson's last game this week (and he was still playing) and it was a Crows home showdown, you would be happy for Wilson to have a send off in front of the Crows faithful? Essendon have big crowds at the Dome no matter where they are placed so fair to say less Saints fans would have been there than a home game, simple maths IMO

My bet is that there will be a lot there given its the last game that the Bombers members and season ticket holders will see involving their team until March 2009. Surely you can work out why they had it yesterday its not that hard. Its about giving you most loyal full paying fans a chance to farewell him, not just the few that can get hold of the left over tickets for the Ess game.

Yes,I am struggling to come to terms with it.I think it is a load of shite. When he retires acknowledge his career.

A send off yesterday, then play this week (after his send off) then play the week after (two games after his send off) and then maybe play the week after........it might never end.

This in no way is a reflection of the admiration I have for him, just poor managment IMO.

It was his testimonial, why would that be any time other than a St Kilda home game?
