There seems to be an increasing tendency of players to kick the ball along the ground when shooting on an open goalmouth.
In recent times Daniel Motlop, Dale Thomas and Buddy Franklin have scored some freak goals on tight angles using that method. It looks spectacular but is definitely a low percentage technique with an oval-shaped ball.
Now players seem to be doing the same thing directly in front of goal. Mitch Clark for the Brisbane Lions did it on Saturday night. Running into an open goal 15m out he dribbled it along the ground instead of kicking a nice straight airborne drop punt. As luck would have it the ball broke off course and he missed.
Never use a fancy technique when a simple one will do!
