Came across this short bio on Crows Assistant Coach Paul Hamilton, clearly the Crows are struggling at present to find improvements in their form for several different reasons. My question is should the Crows at their end of year review discover that the club has not reached the goals set for this season, will they undertake a review of the coaching staff? Will Mark Mickan be offered a position at the Crows with Hamilton to make way for him?

Paul Hamilton

Paul Hamilton joined Neil Craig at the Crows for the 2005 season as the defensive coach and brought a well-developed tactical understanding of the game to the Adelaide Football Club. He played 105 games with the Bombers including the 1990 Grand Final against Collingwood before heading to South Australia to continue his playing career with Glenelg. His coaching career began in Tasmania where he took Glenorchy to a premiership win in his final year of his three-year tenure (1999). A second move to South Australia followed in 2000, where he took the reins at the Woodville West Torrens Football Club. The Eagles finished the year minor premiers and he took the team to its first Grand Final appearance in six years. Lured back to Melbourne in 2001 Hamilton’s first two seasons with the ‘Roos’ saw him coach their reserves team and work closely alongside Denis Pagan, while in 2003 and 2004 he was responsible for the midfield and forward line respectively.

I've often wondered if Hamilton did not leave in 2000 whether or we wouold have won the flag sooner than 6 years later. I've also wondered the same, but with Mickan after 1999. Considering he now is in his third season with Glenelg, and the first two seasons he has been at Glenelg are very similar to the seasons he spent at the Eagles, what would have been 2000 like with him still there?

Anyway, having said that, would Paul Hamilton or Mark Mickan be a better coach for the Crows than Neil Craig?

I reckon Mickan's doing a great job at Glenelg and is a potential AFL coach. I'm not sure it will be at Adelaide though, i think Neil Craig will do that for as long as he wants, especially given his relationship with Steven Trigg.

Mickan is probably more a chance to be in contention when Williams leaves Port (whenever that may be). Who knows he could even be in contention at Richmond.

Neil Craig will have the senior job for the next 3 years at least. And so he should - he has proven he can lift what seem to be average lists so he'll get his opportunity to mould his own team and have a good crack at it.

As for Paul Hamilton - every club starts reviewing their football operations about now as I understand, as they begin planning for 2009. That's why Michael Voss has already signed with West Coast. All the clubs will be putting feelers and offers out already for coaches. If Mickan or MacGowan are on anyone's radars they would already have been sounded out.

Mickan would probably need to find an assistant's role first if that's his ambition - I wonder if he may decide to return to Cararra

Mickan has already been an AFL assistant, i doubt he'd leave the Bays after doing the hard yards there, for a secondary role.

John Reid is THE luckiest man in football today. A hack who has somehow managed to stay employed whilst far more talented people with FAR better people skills are doing other things.
I never realised that coaching Woodville to one RESERVES premiership carried so much weight.
