Any Glenelg fans out there care to tell us whats happening with James Sellar?? Only seen stats in paper but far from impressive... is this a true indication??

Couple years ago it seemed he and Bryce Gibbs were clearly above other juniors and now seems lost....

Got about 8 weeks to show something IMO

Can't see how anyone can rate this bloke...................looks slow and out of place even at SANFL level.

we are quite happy down at brighton road, simply because he demands a key defender on him each week, which when you through in grima duldig and kirkby stretches most defences

or what ? The Crows de list him ?

You say this going on stats in the paper ? Never seen him ?

Why don't you wander down to Richmond on Saturday, and then Bay the following week and have a look for yourself.
Make an informed decision once you've seen the bloke...

He's 19, and the expectations placed on him by Crow morons are nothing but ridiculous. The Crows will/should give
him a couple of year at least, to mature and to find the form he is capable of.

Love him at Glenelg...

To be fair SJABC, Mop Up was just asking how Sellar was going, I don't think he was even trying to make an informed decision on him and as he said "going by the stats in the paper" his form doesn't standout at all. And Stampy's comment that he demands a strong defender each week is true but can wear thin after a while for a coach/team/club otherwise you could have Humphrey Bear down forward, not taking the piss out of Sellar at all. I guess that he was selected pretty high in the draft there's added expectation of the kid.

If someone can say something about how long they think the player has, then surely
you'd want to base that sort of opinion on more then having a squiz at the paper ?

Can you look at stats and equate it to form ?

Stampy is right. Sells is important for Glenelgs structure ATM, which includes back up
ruck duties for Cranny, as a key forward, which does release a defender, and is pivotal
in the forward line rotations which ensures that we can run Dogger, Toddy G & Roar
off the bench when required.

Sells may be lacking a bit in form, but he is a confidence player, and the decision for the
Crows to play him for the one game, at night, when the ball would be slippery, when the going
would be tough for any forward, then to drop the kid instead of perhaps giving him a chance
is one I don't agree with.

He will make it, but just needs his confidence up and running, to stamp his impression on the game.

Need to remember he was injured for a lot of last season too...

I thought he showed promise in the Crows trials, but he probably does need a little time to develop.
Some players in all sports, if they have been a talented kid standing out without effort in junior ranks, never learn to put in hard to earn their place when they are no longer automatic "stars". They may then try harder in a game in the "big time" and get lazy playing at what they see as a lower level, and thus never win themselves the chance again. Hopefully, he is not one of those.

I think the crows should play him close to goal. If i remember rightly thats where he played ok in the trials kicked 3 or 4 and hard to match close to goal one out. A traget that doesnt leave the 50 is what the crows need urgently

You are probably right. Ken Mc Gregor was OK in that role too. But when the club management starts asking those players to run around like midfielders instead of staying there to take contested marks, it undoes the sense of the selection. [I really don't think Kenny came up with trying to do that on his own.]

8 weeks to show something!!!!!

The crows will sign him for next year. they are very happy with what he is doing down at the bays playing in alot of different roles its Its hard to dominate when Glenelg have the forward line they do. has done what glenelg have asked of him. he is only 19 big fellas take a while.
Dont worry about james he will make a good AFL player and play 200 games for the crows.

Really? I reckon we badly need a CHF, one that makes lead after lead and keeps presenting for the midfielders/defenders.

I think we need both. I just don't know who is going to prove suitable for the role. Hopefully players like Sellar and Tippett will develop, and maybe Hentschel will come up OK. Maric may become a forward - at least he contests everything. [I'd be prepared to try McGregor at FB and Rutten up forward in the meantime.]

I just can't see Burton, Goodwin, or Stevens, as key position players, and certainly not Jericho, who seems to be at his best where he has more room to run..

Unfortunately for Sellar and the Crows, it looked like he peaked in that game a few years ago against Norwood at the Parade. Big things were expected from there, but he hasn't lived up to the expectation/hype.

The Crows will be patient with him, but if he's not performing by 2010 i'd say his AFL career could be in jeopardy.

Hopefully he finds the mental strength to get there. From what I understand he lacks enormously in this area.

A Legs fan agreeing with a Port supporter

NFC doesn't rate him because he does not line up for Norwood Taylor Walker on the other hand.......... :tonqe:

give the lad time, the media beat up a storm over him and Gibbs for the no.1 pick. Unlucky to get sick at a critical time and therefore struggled and missed some of his development time

He may not have peaked, but to put it bluntly hes gone downhill since that game.

I hope im wrong but he may become another victim of Mummbles and his opinion of having the correct attitude to play AFL football - another example of Mummbles having his head in the sand.

I personally would play him every game as they have done with big Kurt as the experience in 2 years would be much more valuable than him sitting @ the Bays.

I watched Carlton last night and the 2 last number 1 picks ( Kruzer and Gibbs ) played well last night - especially Gibbs !!! So what irks me is that they have played every game and we cant play a kid taken in the same draft as Gibbs but only 13 picks later !!!

I reckon it's tough to point the bone at mumbles on this one ... From what I've seen and heard (and readily admit I could be corrected here) the kid hasn't done enough to warrant AFL selection just yet.

Most of us are also so far removed from the players, their stages of development, what they've been instructed to work on etc, that we perhaps overlook the fact that sometimes playing a kid before he's ready can do more harm than good (Ill admit that sometimes it can have the opposite effect).
