Is D Motlop Overrated or Underrated?

A few weeks ago Mark Williams was criticised by Leigh Matthews for not picking Port players in his coalition of the willing team. At a rather late stage IIRC, Daniel Motlop got called up.
I was suspicious and have a theory that what Motlop was lacking was consistency and that was due to a lack of self belief following the much-highlighted errors (eg Tasmania 2006ish when he stabbed at the ball with a kick after the siren to win the game, and there was another similar one to that as well).
On the flip side, he can kick miracle goals and bags of them as well - he is definitely a confidence player.
I was suspicious of his selection because I think Williams picked him to boost his confidence - both by his selection and playing and also the opportunity to play amongst and against the best talent in the country (that was willing and available on the night).
After that game he had some great performances for the Power but seems to have returned to "hot and cold" performances.
So, is he hot and cold or are we expecting too much of him? Is he overrated therefore, or underrated?

Underrated at being overrated?
Seriously, he has got talent. If only he stopped complaining about not getting frees and tonight stop trying to bump players off their feet, he might use that talent to good use.

No one questions his talent. It's his consistency moreso.
I'd say he has more talent that many other players but other players with less talent seem to be able to have more impact on more games. (LOL, this could become a "Has Motlop Imploded?" topic

but I'd rather have a serious discussion)

Perhaps the impact is all used up in one match now and again, where as a less "talented" player is more smart with dispensing impact.

I can confidently say both.
As far as a player goes from an impact point of view and kicking great goals/taking great marks and single handedly turning a game on its ear there's not too many better at the moment so he can be underrated.
BUT he might go missing for 95% of a game, he might not chase when he should, etc and in that aspect he's probably got a game that's overrated.
So both, if that makes any sort of sense.

A damning statistic for Motlop is his Goal Assists for 2008 ----4 (in 14 games)

He's definitely an enigma. Capable of brilliance that very few others can match but does let himself down on occasions and it can get ugly. Possibly the greatest variation between an "on" and "off" day of anyone in the AFL.

LOL I was going to say neither .. I think he's rated about right at the minute, has plenty of genuine talent, perhaps just needs to find a little bit more in consistency, and perform in some big games, ie finals ... The fact that his team wont be playing them this year is not his fault.

I'm genuinely surprised it is that many to be honest. Not that I mind that, I like to see some player take a bit of ownership for kicking goals.

What frustrates me is his inconsistency, can do the impossible then be very, very ordinary the next week. As posted above he is very much a confidence player, needs a few cheap touches early to get him into games.

The gifted forward had a meeting with Kangaroos coach Dean Laidley and football manager Tim Harrington yesterday morning to inform them of his decision. It is believed the pair were
surprised and disappointed by the news, believing Motlop had been close to signing a lucrative deal to stay at the club.
You usually arent disapointed when you when as you say Dutchy
Roos were quite happy to let him go
