Wayne Carey.. One of the greats

Wayne Carey is and always will be regarded in footy circles as one of the best if not the best footballer of all time or atleast his era. His offield antics have cost him alot. His marriage, ultimately his career and his reputation. Wayne Carey was recently refused Hall of Fame status because of these antics. I believe iregardless of what any footballer does off the field this should not count against them as a footballer. I mean it the 'AFL hall of fame' not the 'Best footballing role model hall of fame'. Any thoughts?

There is more to a "Hall of Fame" than whether you are good at an activity - there is the matter of whether you enhance or impair the reputation of your sport or profession, and thus its acceptability and respect in the community at large.

I think that's over-dramatising what happened in this year's intake. Carey remains eligible to enter for the rest of his life

I think you need to check the criteria they use for accepting people into the HOF. It talks about character and role-model type stuff. I think that's fair enough what if a star player was a paedophile I wouldn't want him in the HOF.

I reckon even Wayne himself wouldn't have wanted to go in just yet. I think all parties sensibly chose to wait until some dust settles on his off-field issues. Wayne would rather go in when things are more positive for him I reckon.

Hall of Fame should be for footballing excellence, nothing else. The reason we have all these other issues involved is because we have moral watchdogs such as Caroline Wilson on the selection panel which is wrong.

It should be incumbent members of the Hall of Fame to invite new players to join THEIR club. It should have nothing to do with idiot journalists.

How can you have a Hall of Fame and not include Wayne Carey?

You would have to create a "Hall of Infamy" for him and a few others.

Think it is all just a little over rated myself, what these guys do is their occupation these days, most on this site have a job and do it to the best of their ability, how many of you or your work place have a hall of fame, probably none

The irony of course being that they wouldn't want to look too hard at some of the "gentlemen" that are already in theres antics.

That's true, and Carey will get in when it can happen without it causing furore. They are just waiting for the antisocial behaviour patterns to be far enough in the past to be forgotten.

Precisely LL. There are some people in the Hall of Fame with histories far more serious than anything Wayne Carey did. I just think the Hall of Fame should be based on football deeds only.
