Garry 'Buddha' Hocking
aka 'Whiskers'

274 Games
243 Goals
Geelong Team of the Century
Carji Greeves Medal 91,93,94,96
State of Origin Vic 1998
All Australian 91,93,94,96

Garry Hocking was one of the most decorated footballers of the brilliant, if ultimately unsuccessful Blight era. Whenever anyone ever reeled out the old 'handbags' line I used to say to them 'well, tell that to Garry Hocking. I'll come and visit you in hospital after he runs right through you'.

Hocking was a hard player who used his rugged physique to his best advantage. That does not mean however that Garry was not a skillful player. Hocking was regularly up amongst the leading vote getters in the Brownlow Medal, although almost as often he was ineligible to win the award. Young Cats walked a little taller when Buddha was on the field and old Cat fans always reeled off his name first whenever it was said that Geelong were a one man team. As a Norwood and Geelong man I awlays thought of Hocking as Geelong's McIntosh.

Congratulations Buddha Hocking. Deservedly inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame.

FFS its not suspposed to be the AFL HAll of Fame it is suspposed to be the AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL Hall of Fame but you can see by theri token efforts to recognise football outside of Victoria it is really the AFL/VFL HOF.

Jesaulenko has been elevated to Legend status, he is already in the HOF.

Other than Sheedy, Motley and Tuddenham none of the others have the claims to the HAll of Fame as Peter Carey.

Hall of Shame - as it doesn't recognise Australian Football apart from a token nominees each year when it is obviously biased to the VFL and its newer version the AFL.

One question why is it OK to recognise most games umpired in a "major league" (QAFL???) but not the most games played in a major league???

How does four of those records stack up to:

448 game
3 premierships
521 goals
19 state game of which many were SOO
two time All Australian i.e when he played against current HOFers Moore, Fitzpatrick and Moss he was judged to be a better Ruckman
Has contributed to football behind the scenes with sponsorship in two states TAsmania & SA i.e hasn't sought official office but has assisted this game nationally behind the scenes
Chairman of Selectos at Glenelg
Board member at Glenelg.

yes those persons nominated last night are worthy recipients and have made a great contribution to Australian Football (in time) and as I said three of them deserve to be there ahead of Super but four of tehm are no where near as worthy as Super, IMO.

THE JUDGING PANEL SHOULD HANG THEIR HEADS IN SHAME
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Great post Tassie. Same argument could be made for many great players from SA and WA who are overlooked year in year out. It just makes a mockery of the whole concept when Glen Jackovich (good player i know) is a member of the Hall of Fame but someone like Peter Carey isn't.

As for the Hall of Fame game and the players "donating" their match payments to charity, what a joke that is. The charity they are donating to is the AFL/VFL Past Players Association. Good concept in theory and the idea to help out ex players who have fallen on hard times is commendable but the requirement for membership is that you must have played at least 1 AFL/VFL game. So basically the bloke who played 1 game for a VFL side is entitled to assistance from this group but a guy who's played over 400 games in the SANFL isn't. National competition my ar5e.

Tom Leahy yes he is a worthy inductee based on what I read on him too LL (thanks to you)

How is he related to Glenelg footballer Rex Leahy - not that Rexy should be part of the HOF

Exactly Dutchy. Thanks for saying what we are all thinking.

And Tassie don't sweat too much I get the feeling Carey will be in very soon. There seems to be a lot of lobbying going on on his behalf. Remember this is the Hall Of Fame that didn't have Ken Farmer in it's initial intake and had Neil Kerley inducted before him :-k

totally AGREE!! When compared to those not inducted it makes it even more glaringly obvious!

Eventually all of that 1990 team are gonna get in the HOF the way its going.

Cant wait to see Michael Christian and Gavin Crosisca get in there...

Wasn't Dean Kemp inducted a year or 2 ago as well. He was an above average footballer, but not the type that should be rushed into the HoF before others more worthy.

Inducted last year..
Player honours (from AFL.com.au - Hall of Fame)
Player Honours: club best & fairest 1992; captain 2001; premierships 1992, 1994; Norm Smith Medal 1994; All Australian 1992; Western Australia (2 games, 1 goal).

Right between Paul Kelly and Knuckles Kerley...he just looks out of place..

And spent four years with Geelong before coming over to SA. Could have easily added 300 more goals to his tally with a full SANFL career.

Booooo Buddha, boooo Browny!
Where's Peter Carey?

As much as I loved watching both Buddha and Browny, to me they aren't greats of the game.
Brown was actually my fave Pies player for a while, but to have alongside some of the actual greats of the game is a bit ordinary I think.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.
