Player Loaning (EPL Style) in the AFL?

Postby Sojourner » Wed Apr 30, 2008 9:44 pm

Just wondering how long it will be until the AFL embraces the concept of "Player Loaning" as done in the English Premier League the richest sporting club competition in the world?

For the uninitiated the way Player loaning works is something like the following examples,

Hernan Crespo is a recently departed Chelsea striker. He was signed away from Inter Milan in 2003 for 16.8 million Euros. For the 2004-2005 season, he was loaned to AC Milan. The loan means that he still belonged to Chelsea, where he played the 2005-2006 season.

Players can be loaned from other EPL clubs Intra Club, Sheffield Wednesday in a desperate attempt to avoid relegation have Five players loaned from other clubs - Ben Sahar (Chelsea), Franck Songo'o (Portsmouth), Bartosz Slusarksi (West Brom), Adam Bolder (QPR) Graham Kavanagh (Sunderland).

In theory then an SANFL club could "loan" an AFL club a player if they were good enough. Alternitivley an AFL club could "loan" an SANFL club a player that they did not have a place for in their senior side.

It could even happen that a club that does not make the finals could "loan" a player to one that does, so if Brisbane missed the finals for example then Jonathon Brown could line up for Hawthorn or Matthew Pavlich for Geelong etc.

I am not keen on the idea, yet considering how the AFL are constantly changing the rules I wont be surprised if they look into it even in some type of modifed form!

Competitions like the EPL have a cut-off point for trades and loans so the finallists wouldn't necessarily be known (ie, every team should still be aspiring toward them).

Think the differences in structure between the competitions wouldn't ever allow it to come into any Aussie Rules competition.

Spot on CP. Look at say Liverpool  , there 1st team squad consists of 55 players (according to their website). So 32 players (11 on the pitch + 4 subs) required for the EPL & Reserves, means a surplus of 23 blokes.

The best thing for surplus guys is to get a run, where the club i.e Liverpool deem fit.

The AFL and especially the Victorian sides, are aligned with a VFL side, say Carlton for example. The players are aligned with the Northern Bullants, but the 'ants still need to top up the A's & provide a B's side. So why would an AFL team loan blokes out when their own affiliates need to make up numbers ?

The season is too short for a "trade window" as well, remembering the EPL runs for just about 10 months of the year. Liverpool had their first trial on the 07th July 2007, and the final game (pending Champions League) is on the 11th May. A long season !!

Do the EPL also have a maximum number they can have on their playing roster?

Er no, the AFL can't even sort out the tanking issue let alone manage player loans, free agency or anything more complicated than a chook raffle. As long as Andy D and his schoolboy offsider can point to the crowd figures and smile, they'll reckon they are doing a good job. The reality is that the AFL is completely inflexible and is totally lacking in genuine vision beyond anything that makes a buck.

No, Footy should get the basics right like the draw and the rules.

No limit on squad size nor on the amount of coin one wishes to spend. For example Pool have 55, whilst struggler's Derby have 35 on their list. If you have the cash say like Pool & Manure, then you can just buy blokes that you think may do OK, like Huth for Liverpool, then loan them out somewhere, hope they do real well for the loaned team, and then either keep them after a season getting a run around in a good football environment or sell them at trade period for a profit...basically players become pawn chips, especially ones like Huth who are good enough for a National side, yest can't crack the 1's...

That is why there is a huge discrepancy between the top 4 - 6 in the EPL to the bottom 4 - 6.

Not in the EPL they can't. Unsure about other leagues though...

Deal! I think Lonie could be developed, like Symes, under the right coach.

You're right mate, only a Premiership coach could get the best out of these blokes.*

*Footnote-I am aware Symes is going well, however, with a fit Wilson,Bentley,Thomas,Thompson,Stewart is there a spot (in Ports opinion) for Symes?

I dont think so and was happy to see the bloke get more opportunity elsewhere, well done to him.(Not Craig Neil  )
