1980 VFL GF replay on TV yesterday

Postby smac » Mon Apr 07, 2008 12:58 pm

Sat with smac jr to watch a bit of this replay yesterday... By christ they moved the ball fast at times. Good tough footy, really enjoyed what I saw of the game.

smac jr. asked me if Kevin Bartlett was Crackers the clown (from the yellow pages ad). Great call I thought.

They keep saying the pace of the game is a lock quicker these days but if you take a close look at footy in the 70s there isn't a lot in it. A mate and I were watching one of the 1973 (?) finals between Richmond and Collingwood and the ball was zipping from one end to another so quick it was every bit as pacy as today's footy.

Needless to say it was more exciting and better to watch.

1973 VFL Preliminary Final Richmond 15.15.105 d Collingwood 14.14.98.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

How I wish the Tigers of today could be something like the Tigers of that great era.

Agreed, won't pretend that the SANFL was better or the same standard as the VFL pre AFL days

I mean the great Sturt side of 1976 wouldn't have beaten the VFL Premiers Hawthorn but they would've given the 76 VFL spooners Collingwood a right good touch up....

Would love to see move SANFL footy replays from the 70s and 80s....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Yeah the only highlights we get are on Simply Footy and I dont think they're doing those highlights as well as they did in the early episodes of the show. Would be great if the ABC could follow ch 7's lead and show a half an hour of highlights of an old (70's or 80's) SANFL game either before or after their their coverage each Saturday. Clearly the ABC head honchos in Sydney wouldn't allow it though because of the need to show lawn bowls

you would think that they would show classic SANFL games in SA. or even old showdowns with the showdown on in the afternoon. 7 would be able to get SANFL games from other stations wouldnt they

A classic SANFL grand final ( which i witnessed from the members stand ) was the 1984 clash between Port Adelaide and Norwood .
I would gladly watch that game again even though the Magpies lost . The pace , skill and courage shown in that match will stick with me forever .
What i dont know about football isnt worth knowing .
