Fevola strikes trouble in the wee hours
By Adam Cooper
March 17, 2008 TROUBLE-prone Carlton forward Brendan Fevola faces possible suspension for the start of the AFL season after urinating in public outside a Melbourne nightclub.

Fevola, who last year found his career in jeopardy after he was suspended by the Blues for on-field petulance, confirmed to his club he had urinated outside a nightclub in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The Seven Network screened close-circuit television footage of the incident.

Carlton said in a statement Fevola had confirmed to the Blues "an incident did take place", and that the club was "considering the issue seriously".

"The leadership group will now meet to discuss the matter and decide on what actions should be taken against Brendan," the statement said.

Fevola's latest controversy is one both he and Carlton cannot afford given the Blues open the 2008 season against Richmond at the MCG on Thursday night.

His actions mean new Blues skipper Chris Judd and his teammates must consider either suspending or fining Fevola, after the Blues banned the full-forward for one game halfway through the 2007 season.

Fevola, 27, who is part of the Carlton leadership group, was suspended last season after then-coach Denis Pagan became frustrated with the spearhead's poor on-field attitude and told him to become a better team player.

AFL clubs have taken a hard line against disciplinary and alcohol-related incidents in recent seasons, as Melbourne last week suspended midfielder Colin Sylvia for one game for breaking a team curfew.

Geelong suspended half-forward Steve Johnson for five games at the start of last season after he was involved in an alcohol-related incident during the preceding off-season, although he did return to become one of the stars of the Cats' premiership win.

Fevola's poor disciplinary record dates back to 2001, when he was involved in three alcohol-fuelled incidents, and hit a nadir in 2006, when he was sent home from Ireland in disgrace after brawling with a barman during the international rules tour.

The 2006 Coleman medallist angered AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou over the Ireland incident and was forced to apologise.

Fevola's suspension last year fuelled speculation he would be traded by Carlton at season's end, but he was retained and included in the club's leadership group behind Judd.

Fevola swore off alcohol in 2006 before winning the league's goal kicking award, and that was a similar promise NRL star Sonny Bill Williams made after he was last year fined $650 for urinating outside a nightclub.

Similarly, high-profile Roosters rugby league player Willie Mason was fined last month for urinating in a public place on the New South Wales mid-north coast.

Better get in before Booney here...

By all reports the coach is really pissed off

Fevola's manager is furious that the details were leaked out to the media

Urine in deep trouble now Fev!

Carlton were looking for a way to slash advertising expenditure and figure any publicity is good publicity

Brendan Fevola showed that even in the pre-season his accuracy is decidedly suspect

this will be a test for Ratten's and Judd's leadership

Ratten will take input from the leadership group prior to Deciding any disciplinary action

Judd decided not to consider the hawks because of poor discipline and behaviour issues

Both the new coach and captain have an opportunity to make a statement

Yes but your form is not going to influence an AFL team's season. Perhaps he could play for Pt Melbourne since they didn't get Cuzzy!

Despite what pressure the media are applying, Carlton would be better off to ignore this and do nothing. How serious is the offence really anyway???

I do wonder if Wayne Wiedemann had his time over at Westies again if he would have suspended Cupido for the first game of the season which they ended up losing. Starting the season with a losing streak is hardly the way forward for any club.

If he had no past form, I would agree with you, Sojourner. He has plenty of past form and this can't be treated as some piddling offence...

I could imagine Carlton's management would be pissed off at having to deal with this so early in the season.
Oh well, at least he was only having a whizz and wasn't on the whizz like some other clubs' stars.

I would think that him being out at 4am a few days before the first round is the main issue here.

I agree, who cares if he took a slash outside a nightclub, but someone with his 'form' probably needs to think a little bit more about where, when and what he does.

Donkey??? It seems some posters have a very close relationship with the club they support ha ha. Yeah, we've all had that secret slash in an alley way, or behind a bin or a bush..but how many of us have pi55ed on a restraurant window?

Not the sharpest tool in the shed but a tool all the same.

Undoubtedly a tool. But did FEV hurt anyone ?

Every club has one, and FEV is Carlton's...

As to Donkey, that is the name the lads call him...Don't know why but

Every club, jabber? Can you name one from every club that springs to mind as readily as Fev?

The bloke will find himself on the outer pretty soon, if Carlton are serious. Of course everyone has tinkled where they shouldn't have when out late. Not in view of a security camera though.

The thing that is the issue IMO is the time that he was out until.

5 days before the first game of the season and he is out until 4.30 pissing on restaurant windows. Not good enough

I guess we all have different thoughts on how we'd handle things ... Personally I think if Judd and the other members of the leadership group are serious about trying to implement a successful new era, they should throw the proverbial book at him.

Don't think taking a whizzer after a night on the gas is the worst crime by any stretch, but on a restaurant window is ordinary, and shows the bloke isn't too serious about atoning for numerous previous indiscretions.

The club can't accept giving him a slap on the wrist this time imho and risk breaching any form of discipline standards they expect to see the remainder of their (young) list to abide by.
