Simon Goodwin

It has been touted during the last couple of weeks by the coach that we will be seeing Simon Goodwin floating around the forward line a fair bit for the crows this year !!!
If Simon is not going to be in the middle I would rather see him go back to a half back role where his rebound and read on the play will be invaluable to an inexperienced midfield - he can kick the ball 60 metres and break the lines extremely well !!!
I really hope the coach is bluffing every one on this and doesnt get stuck in one of his "this is what I am doing and I will stick with it until it works" decisions.

Settle down anti-NC club!
Firstly, its part-time forward line, rest-of-time midfield
Secondly, he is a strong mark and a strong and accurate kick for goal. We have our defence covered with ready back-ups the forward line is where we need some help. To quote Wedgie "it's not rocket science"!
Thirdly, most quality midfielders drift into the forward line as they age rather than flog them off HB as tho they are 25 again
To veer off topic .... look for Johncock to slot in to more midfield play this season so I hear which will be great!

They've been talking about Johncock playing in the midfield for about the last 4 or 5 years now but it never happens. I've heard its due to a fitness "issue", i wonder if anything will be different this year..
As for Goodwin, i think the best option would be to play him on the ball for half a game, resting on a forward flank for the other half a game.

Yes I have been frustrated as to why Stiffy hasn't got his fitness up to the level needed to play midfield because he is good enough IMO
However I hear this year is different finally but we'll see .... I have my fingers crossed anyway

I believe his issue is that hes a smoker, and thats his biggest hurdle to playing in the midfield. Maybe the talk is coming up because the Crows foresee that Symes could play in his spot across half back thereby freeing him up for a position further up the field.

Mcleod and Johncock should stay across half back...they are arguably the best half back combo in the league, why f*&k with it?

Hopefully you are correct about your firstly point !!!
On your second point he is a solid mark @ best and his set shots are not that accurate - his value for shooting @ goal is when he is running @ the sticks in which he rarely misses !!!
On your third point - Mcleod ??? ( Maybe Mcleod - Goody swapping !!! )

McLeod has spent most of his time off half back and is still as quick as ever. Having said that, I could see him in time becoming a dangerous goal sneak maybe ala Wanganeen.
Goodwin has not spent much time at HB at all IIRC? That's why I don't understand why you want to plonk him there now when we have enough options in that part of the field.

97 grand final and I would assume he was there for most of that year?

Nah I thought he was tagging in the midfield?
Our defensive group in that GF year was from Caven, Edwards, James, Pittman, Hart, Jameson, McLeod IIRC
Remember Goodwin's clutch goal in the 97 Prelim plus I think he kicked one in the 2nd quarter of the 97 GF
I don't think he has hardly set foot on HB ever since

You learn something new everyday. I now know that there is a pro-NC club!

I suppose I shouldn't really be surprised..he's the best coach in Australia for 11 months of the year ha ha.

Goody has moved in to the midfield over the last 6 to 7 years for sure but started across half back and definately was back there in 97 and 98 !!!

That's what I thought. Can remember some clutch grabs in defence during those GF's

I think you guys need to have a look back at the tapes .....
He was named as ruck-rover in the 98 GF and I remember him tagging Harvey (or someone else) as part of a midfield rotation in 97. As I said, in 97 where did he fit in the back 6 out of Smart, Hart, McLeod, Pittman, Caven, Jameson, Edwards and James?????
He may have drifted down there as part of his tagging role and taken a few grabs that's about it
IIRC
I accept he started there as a 20 year old but so did the Roo would you have played him at HB last year instead of the forward line (or the year before)?

Blue Boy watch the tape again sometime
Edwards and James spent a lot of time in defence and DJ spent the second half at FF
Shane Ellen moved to HB in the second half and I don't think Smart played at HF much
Goody was running with their midfielders
