This is the heading of the main article on http://www.news.com.au at the moment.

But what annoys me is how this implies that the person plays for one of the the 16 AFL clubs, when he actually just plays for Cranbourne Football Club in some Melbourne suburban league.

Why doesn't Australia (and especially NSW and QLD) realise that the AFL is just one particular league???

PS - I'm not saying anything against the person or family involved here in which are obviously tragic circumstances - I'm just having a go at the shoddy journalism.

Ecky, I'm with you. When I played footy in Canberra, people used to ask me if I played AFL and I said "No" (cos I didn't play AFL, I played Aussie Rules).

Now with Soccer calling itself Football, AFL is the known term for Aussie Rules - stupid, garbage media decision.

Anyone North of the Murray calls it AFL, not aussie rules, dont think your ever going to change that....

But they have only been doing it (and the use has gradually been increasing) for the last 10 years or so, so it isn't like it is a term that has a long history or is traditional in any way.

Agree that it's a misleading headline though.

gadj sorry to be pedantic but I think you'll find that the correct term for soccer is Association Football. Can get extremely confusing at times when catting with mates and someone refers to 'footy'...here that could mean soccer, gaelic, Aussie Rules and in some cases rugby.

Jas, don't disagree with you, I'm meaning the media call it Football - if you watch Foxsports especially, their "ticker" refers to the "Football" results and "AFL" results.

NB: Foxsports have their headquarters in Sydney, hence the stupid Football term!

Fair enough...in Oz football = Aussie rules, in the UK football = soccer and no doubt in the US football = gridiron...maybe life would be easier if the word football was changed
