Harvey better than Hird

Nathan Buckley is currently on 3AW and has said that Robert Harvey was a
better player than James Hird.
Carey is the best he has seen but to Dwayne Russell's and Clinton Gybas's(interviewing Buckley)
surprise, he nominated Harvey as the better player.

I doubt that winning awards has a great deal to do with who is the better player, although it has some relationship, but awards are more to do with who gets on with the press, or who is not rude to the umpires!

Flags aren't really a major think to compare players though. It would be like saying Dunstall was better than Lockett because he played in multiple premierships and Lockett none. Their achievements were fairly similar, but i'd say Lockett had a better career and was a better player, although only just.

Dunstall was more consistant, but was also blessed to play in a better side with the ball getting delivered exceptionaly well. Lockett on his day was better IMHO.

Dunstall was better than Lockett IMHO.

Both absolute champions, Lockett more devastating at his absolute best but Dunstall more consistent over his career. Very difficult to separate both really. I think it was Brereton that said if you were choosing one of them you'd take Lockett in a one off game such as a State Game, but you'd take Dunstall in a home and away season.

I tend to agree. When I think of Hird, it's his ability to do freakish things at the most inopportune time (especially vs Carlton). Harvey was more of a constant and consistent player especially around packs.

Hird also could play anywhere really - more so in his early days, but I recall him playing on G Ablett (snr) at FB one day. Harvey was more of a goal kicking on baller in his early days, then less of a goalkicking on baller as he got older.

For sheer persistence, longevity in the game and ball getting ability I'd pick Harvey by a whisker.

They are totally different players and hence impossible to compare. As for who id much rather in my team, it depends what sort of player is needed. Buckley has payed against them both so his opinion needs to be respected I s'pose

Harvey is an absolute champion but Hird could play a key position, on ball or running flank as well as being a dynamic leader so I'd go for Hird over Harvey.

As for the full forwards it would be Plugger for me just for his intimidation value.

Harvey won 2 Brownlows in a row which places him in an elite handful

Not that I can really separate the 2 just commenting on why some people are so quickly assuming Bucks in wrong

As for Plugger v Dunstall .... only Hawthorn supporters could put Dunstall ahead surely

Don't get me wrong Harvs was a stalwart down @ Moorabbin, an absolute star!
