AS A new generation of footballers embarks on an AFL career, the league's players association today pays tribute to recently retired champions of the game.

The Madden Medal, named in honour of Simon and Justin Madden, recognises the contribution of seven of the competition's brightest stars, with one to be named the inaugural winner.

Former Collingwood captain Nathan Buckley, Brownlow medallist and former Essendon skipper James Hird, Adelaide's Mark Ricciuto, Carlton star Anthony Koutoufides, Western Bulldogs greats Chris Grant and Luke Darcy and Shinboner of the Century Glenn Archer all hung up their boots at the end of the 2007 season and make up the first shortlist of candidates.

Descriptive words used : captain, brownlow medallist, star... etc

And "Adelaide's Mark Riccuito"

I'd have been happy to have him at Norwood - it just went on two seasons too many - just like Tredders for Port, Buckley for Collingwood etc.
