Good to see yet another South player captaining the Crows

Postby Sojourner » Thu Dec 13, 2007 1:15 pm

Who knows, maybe Simon Goodwin will have the midas touch that Mark Bickley had! Either way its good to see the Crows turning towards the best SANFL club for their new captain. 8)

From the ABC,

Goodwin to lead Crows
Posted Wed Dec 12, 2007 4:41pm AEDT

Simon Goodwin has been appointed Adelaide Crows captain for the 2008 AFL season.

The 31-year-old's selection follows the retirement of Mark Ricciuto, who hung up the boots after the Crows' exit in the first week of this year's finals series.

Goodwin, a three-time club champion and two-time premiership player, was the unanimous choice of both the playing and coaching groups, with the decision ratified by the Crows board this morning.

He said he was humbled to be the new Crows captain.

"I'm very passionate about the footy club," he said.

"I've been here a long time now and I've seen the club grow from very early infancy right through to now, so I'm very proud to be in this role and very honoured."

Goodwin will head a leadership group of six, which also includes Nathan Bassett, Brett Burton, Tyson Edwards, Ben Rutten and Nathan van Berlo

I suppose the Blackbirds do have a season coming up where they can look forward to a set of South Adelaide like results.

I think they had 2 options.

1 Reward the guy with the experience, credentials and achievements (B+F, All Aust) even tho its prob only a 2 year stint (maybe 3)
2 Follow the new youth policy and go with Ben Rutten for the longer haul

I could have lived with either but leaned towards Rutten after the recent clean out. Now that Goody is appointed and Rutten is in the leadership group under him then best of both worlds.

Goodwin is very deserving of the gig IMO.

agree Hondo, Goodwin has played some top notch footy consistently now for a number of years, he had that slight hickup with the gambling thing but apart from that I cannot think of any other misdermeanour. He continues to have an impact on most games he plays in and deserves the leadership.

1. Goodwin captain for next 2 years.
2. VB to captain for the following 6+ years.

I think Goody will make a good skipper, and it's a good decision by the club, gives VB, Truck etc a bit more time to take up the role. Leadership looks pretty solid for the future.

It was mentioned on 5AA that he stepped back from the leadership group from his own choice, which seems an interesting decision for him to make, maybe he just has had enough of that type of role?

He's good with the media too. If they were to attemp to take a photo that might be incriminating against him or the team, he is already skilled in the art of verbal threats of physical abuse.

Locky may we me so bold to suggest the Port supporters might want to pause on the Goodwin pay-outs until their Captain signs his contract, if he does

Shouldn't Norwood supporters be shouting from the roof tops about a Norwood lad being a premiership captain of the greatest team of all rather than someone who's coaching an ordinary side?
Or are they a little less excitable than South fans?
