As reported today

THE North Melbourne Football Club is expected to commit before Christmas to a permanent move to the Gold Coast in 2010, with one of the few remaining obstacles to relocation now in the hands of club lawyers.

still cant see what the rush is.....

I think the AFL want us up there to capitalise on the current swing to AFL following the lions success and many expats moving up there, I reackon they are thinking they can become the No. 1 sport in Qld if they have 2 teams up there and continue to develop the market

Im not against it as long as they look after the Melb members, while not big in numbers a more passionate lot you would not find...

Reakon the Titans might have something to do with it.

AFL probably doesn't want to give the NRL too much of a head-start in (correct me if I'm wrong) one of the fastest-growing parts of the country.

Last thing they'd want is another Canberra Raiders-type ambush...

No argument there

Hopefully this is a way of securing the future of the club while still honoring the proud tradition

10 teams in Victoria is just not sustainable in the long term IMO

But we'll see ....

It's sad that it is going to happen, but I guess it is inevitable. The "Gold Coast Kangaroos" or "North Kangaroos" or just "The Kangaroos"?

Hopefully the move is a success, but I'm not overly convinced a side on the Gold Coast will work. Would hate to see the club not only leave Melbourne, but then die a slow death in a foreign place.

My view has always been, their is too many teams in Melbourne

I believe, their is a wonderful oppotunity at the Gold Coast, however, Dutchy put it perfectly, the AFL and the Club need to mangae the Change and ensure the club Members are the #1 priority when managing this change..

Agree there are too many teams in Melbourne. The change has to happen.

However, it still sux if you're an old North Melbourne supporter who has grown up watching your club almost every week.

Pretty hard to see that "shinboner spirit" be transferred to the high rise buildings of the Gold Coast.

South Melbourne, Fitzroy, North Melbourne - all pages of history. More and more Vic supporters are getting to know what it's like to have footy as you once knew it completely screwed over by the business that is the AFL.

.
1 saturday arvo game in Melbourne most Saturdays at best.Compared with 6 and all the colours and hype of everyone merging back together in the city after matches,Not being able to see your team when interstate on free to air tv(up to 8 times for some sides in the past-not like some who have had everygame in the clubs history on free to air tv),Home grounds gone forever.I think Melbourne footy fans are well aware of what being screwed over feels like.

Yes I think the main game is to spread the teams around so the only way to keep in touch is via Foxtel, which will presumably go up to $300 [sorry $299.95] per month and be a "bargain at that price" compared to travelling to go to matches if you could get tickets. Then they can systematically hush up the drug use and the bionic implants necessary to make the apparent standard of "human" endeavour even more spectacular on the screens. :D
