Wonder if that 2006 meeting on "Smorgos boat" is news to Denis,if so,like to be there when Den catches up with any of the boys.If he has had time to deal with it,it might be ok.Doubt it.

Mcgrath had a go @ Pagan to after being delisted @ the end of last year !!!

Pretty poor form by those 4 players on the boat if you ask me.

His methods needed to differ dramatically from Wayne Brittian.

Shows that clubs have to be careful to give in to player revolts as three of the four on the boat are no longer at the club only a year later.

At least it has all worked out for the better.

FFS Kouta footy is an emotional game, if you couldnt crash packs maybe you should have looked at yourself? and even when he apologieses you still have sleepless nights?

Koutoufides also blasted Pagan for his poor list management and was frustrated with Pagan's obsession with the pre-season competition.

"These days 22 rounds is hard enough but for us then it was more like 26," he said.

"Our season started from the beginning of the pre-season competition, while other teams eased their way in. Little wonder we couldn't sustain our form to the end."

seemed to work OK for the Roos who won preseason comps in the 90's...another soft pathetic excuse

that article is a disgrace....Kouta has never been known for his brains and this proves it....very very soft Kouta, making excuses for your performance

any co-incidence Kouta played his best footy when Carlton were going OK? Front runner?

lets look back in 20 years time and see how many flags Kouta has as a coach? WADH

It was just a hypothetical question - and one we will never get to know.

I was never a fan of Pagan's style at Carlton because he didn't seem to adapt his style to a weaker list, but Juddy probably would have suited that North Melbourne game plan of his very well.

Nice work dutchy, yep a culture of excuses there. Always ready to hop to the defence of all things Roo and rightly so. Now this professed fondness for that boring as bat5hit game of Baseball? Hmmm, that is a much harder concept to work out!

glad you argee REB, pathetic excuses....I agree with Benchy that maybe he didnt change his style to adapt to the weaker list, that is a fair point...

as for baseball we can leave that out of this thread, but have you been to a game in the US?

Pagan has the runs on the Board IMO

He had a very average list at Carlton to work with

Any coach needs his cattle no matter how great his coaching is .... or isn't

Alan Joyce has 2 (or 1 ... can't remember?) Premierships as a coach ..... enough said I think

One (in 1988 or 1989) ... with an inherited list that you, me or the town wino could have even coached to a flag.

Agreed Dutch- never had much respect for the game til I attended a game. Now can quite happily watch it (Unfortunately being a KC Royals fan means I dont see too much of em over here!!)

Alan Joyce coached Hawthorn to flags in 1988 & 1991.

But Joyce had an excellent list which had little change between his stand in year in 1988 and his stint in 1991.

Adaptability as a coach is important, which begs me to ask "how did he go at Footscray?".

A great coach can be classed in one way by the fact that if he goes to another club, he changes his style successfully to improve the club.

Much as it hurts to say it, an example is Mick Malthouse - after leaving Footscray, he altered his plan to help the Eagles rise up the ladder and win two flags, then went to Collingwood at their lowest ebb and guided them to two Grand Finals by changing his game plan once again. Also, Kevin Sheedy has had to reinvigorate his style to win the 1984-85 flags and then build a plan for the Baby Bombers which culminated in the 1993 flag.

Pagan and Joyce were good, but I could never class them as great!

None of this episode reflects well on anyone involved -- players, coach, board.
