Mattner likely to join Swans

Postby the joker » Mon Oct 08, 2007 5:53 pm

ADELAIDE defender Martin Mattner looks set to become a Swan, with Sydney coach Paul Roos revealing the South Australian has verbally agreed to trade in his Crows colours in favour of the red and white.

While a deal has not yet been officially made, Roos said Mattner is a strong chance to head to the Harbour City out after giving the Swans confirmation of his intentions on Monday morning.

"We're pretty pleased to have him on board," Roos said, at Telstra Dome on Monday afternoon.

"We've been doing a little bit with Matty and the Crows have been really good to deal with, and we've been pretty keen to pursue it with him.

"We pushed it pretty hard with Marty and he agreed to come to us this morning, so it's just a matter of trying to get things finalised.

"It hasn't absolutely got over the line, but it's pretty well a done deal."

Roos said the 25-year-old's "outside run and good ball use" made him a prime acquisition for the Swans, and compared his abilities to those of Nick Malceski and Tadhg Kennelly.

He said the Swans' first round pick of No.11 overall would not be included in negotiations, and that the Crows were not seeking to obtain it.

The Crows also have ruckmen Ben Hudson and John Meesen involved in trade week talks, after both informed the club they were keen to move on.

Lads remember trades are different from de-listings

Sometimes you have to give up someone who we would have kept if not for the deal (we gave up Sean Wellman and Paul Rouvray to get Darren Jarman)

Anyway, I thought we wanted the Crows to do more trading? This is what happens!

Overloaded - would Sydney want any of those 5 other guys you think are ahead of Mattner to get the chop? If we don't want them then chances are other clubs won't either.

Shoking trade, i get the feeling that after critisism over the last couple of years, now they are going to trade just for the sake of it.... Mattner will play 100+ games for the swans.. look at some of the borderline "duds" they have picked up lately....Bolton, Jolly, Richards etc have all become solid league footballers, in fact Bolton is a very good player.

Bugger, I was happy with Adelaide's decision not to play him as a long kicking, rebounding half back flanker, so he could play for Sturt. I mean, who wants someone doing that for you off a half back flank?

Seriously, his decision making at times was pretty ordinary in the top grade, so I hope he can develop that a bit more in Sydney, where his long kicking will definitely suit the small grounds. Bazza will be looking for him streaming of the back flank at the SCG!

Best of luck Marty.

Where do you think Roo's will play Marty, I'll tell you right now, HB my friend, like I said previously, AFL footballers should have more than one string to his bow.... As a quality AFL footballer, Marty should have the capability to play HB or Wing, that simple

I read with interest, Roos made special comments regarding Marty's good skills, Memo to Roos "Marty had a very poor year with skills and decision making"

Hondo71

Agree with you mate, on one hand, if we don';t trade, we are not aggressive enough, if we do trade, people's expectations are we should be able to trade our potential de-listings for cream.... to get something you need to give something, get realistic people

Marty appeals to Roos, so all the best to Marty, so if Adelaide can negotiate a win - win for all, then I am happy

On Doyle - Crows should only accept Doyle in a package deal, I would be surprised :o if Sydney offered Doyle, as they only have two other establish ruckmen at the club, Jolly and Spida

Draft pick 28 - if this is the case, we need to wait and see who Adelaide pick up with #28 before making a judgement

Personally, I would like to see the Crows obtain pick #28, packaged with a player, my choice would be Schmidt or Grundy, two young SA boys, who will get better with opportunity

Good post.

I think I the crows got Grundy they would be happy. You would be able to develop him into a forward or defender depending on what you need at that time. Which is forwards at the moment.

people need to ask themselves... how many clubs have built a strong list through the trade period, answer........... NONE

Lets look at the Hawks and the Cats, both clubs have build their list through first and second round draft picks

Adelaide has requested second round picks for Mattner, Meesen and Hudson, potentially the club could end up with picks, 10, 21, 22, 27 and 28... this would be our strongest position in the draft ever, what it would also do, is enable us to trade a second round pick or two for players at other clubs, maybe Cameron Wood from the lions

people need to see how the week unfolds prior to making knee jerk reactions

I reckon Mattner will suit Sydney's style, he is a great tackler and I bet thats what Sydney want from him, they also love left footers - most in the AFL?

3 year deal would be great for him as another average year at AFC he would have been delisted..

Mate, we're the worst traders in the business. If we can get 2nd rounders for Hudson and Meesen then I would be satisfied, but it’s the Crows we’re talking about here, I can pretty much guarantee you we’ll come away with 3rd rounders.

As for trading Mattner, it’s appalling. Craig has ruined him and refuses to admit his mistake so he’s decided to send him packing and for a pathetic draft pick.

Just looking at the Adelaide board on BF cant believe some of the crap they write on there - things like Mattner is worth a first rounder

I actually think Crows supporters should be happy to get a second rounder for Mattner, hes obviously not playing his best footy under NC, and indeed was dropped a couple of times throughout the year. May be a good chance to give better opportunities to Douglas and Mackay as well (if Marty is moved on).

NFC

how is adelaide the worst traders?, because we have not actively traded in recent years.

I wish people look at the facts, lets look at the WB, they gave up plenty for McDougall and Aka, how did these blokes perform... what about what Freo gave up for Tarrant and Solomon, how did these guys perform.....

Can someone actually name some clubs that are good traders and name a club that has delievered success on the back of a successful trade period, PLEASE, can someone actually produce some facts rather than myths

Before people get carried away on what the crows should ask for in return for Meesen and Hudson, lets also remember that both WB and Melb have early pre-season picks, so Adelaide are not in the position of strength for these negotiations... their is a risk on negotiating too hard and getting nothing in return, so the club is damed if the do and damed if they don't

Adelaide have had it's fair of success stories from the trade periods, D Jarman, T Bond, S Welsh, J Torney, S Thompson, N Bassett, K Massie, S Stevens, P Caven, B James, K Koster, M Stevens, C Rintoul, M Robran and M Clarke.... , and I can't recall to many ex Crows players running around that has hurt the club in return

at least 7 premiership players in that lot

I just get a little frustrated at people making comments based on perception and not putting it in context to the rest of the competition.

in regards to Mattner, how has craigy ruined him, don't give me the crap about playing him HB, because Roos has already said, he is targeting Mattner as a HB to release Malceski in to the midfield....

Mattner needs to take responsibility for his own form, look at the Geelong players that play HB, they play like midfielders, only Mattner can control his skill and decision making

I think Mattners problems with decision making this year was mainly due to the fact that when he got the ball on half back, all the forwards were behind him and he had noone to kick the ball too....He will thrive in a side who actually plays with a forward line
