QUEENSLAND HAS THE BIG PINEAPPLE; GEELONG SHOULD HAVE THE BIG FOOTBALL
A founding member of the Committee for Geelong, Gary Plumridge, has proposed an iconic “Big Football” be erected in the centre of Geelong or on its foreshore, similar to the Big Pineapple in Queensland.
Mr Plumridge, 48, a former player and coach at Geelong’s Bell Park Football Club and Family First’s lead Senate candidate for Victoria, will organise a meeting of key Geelong identities to discuss the best way to commemorate the team’s historic win.
“Geelong has been revived and we’ve got to keep the momentum going for our great city; keep the spirit alive,” the father-of-four said.
“Everyone is so excited that Geelong is on the map. We talk a lot about boosting tourism and if Geelong had something like the Big Football, families would travel to see it.
“This could be a joint project between the Geelong Football Club, the City of Greater Geelong and the Committee for Geelong, which represents the business community. The AFL would have to be involved as well. I will organise a meeting of representatives from each organisation, including Club President Frank Costa and Mayor Cr Bruce Harwood, to discuss how we can commemorate the win with an iconic tribute the whole community can enjoy and be proud of.
“My idea of a Big Football is just one idea but I reckon it’s a good one. It would need to be mounted on something solid and we could have four TV screens around the base, with one showing footage of the match.
“The other TVs could have documentaries telling the story of the values that built the club. One could trace the history of the club and the huge struggles we’ve had, another could show vision of early games and the other could have scenes of, and comments by, the many remarkable people who have been involved with the club over the years.
“Geelong is the second oldest footy club in Australia and the only regional city to have an AFL footy team. We have such a proud and fascinating footy history and a Big Football would be a great way to show it off.
“Frank Costa was saying last night at a big thanksgiving service that Geelong is a club built on good old commonsense values. He said that, over the years, the club has overlooked players who had talent but didn’t have the character and values. That’s the club spirit and that’s the spirit of Geelong; the spirit we should capture in something like a Big Football.”
If elected to the Senate, Mr Plumridge would become the first ever Victorian Senator to be born, bred and based in Geelong, which would be another huge boost for the city.
