Statement from Essendon Managing Director, Peter Jackson:

Contrary to some media reports, the Essendon Football Club has not made a decision on the appointment of a new coach for 2008.

The process that we originally implemented continues.

We are not discussing publicly the names of people, or time-lines, involved in this process and an announcement on the coaching appointment will be made in due course.

I am extremely disappointed that some private information regarding the coaching appointment has been provided to the media.

Again, I would like to thank those people who applied and stress that the quality of all candidates has been excellent.

LOL. Come on Booney, I was having fun there. Surely they aren't going to appoint the man who taught the Port Magpies how to lose?

ESSENDON has named Matthew Knights its new senior coach, replacing Kevin Sheedy.
Knights, 36, has been given a three-year contract, tying him to the Bombers until the end of the 2010 season.
Knights’ appointment ends a two-month recruitment process that began when the Essendon board confirmed on July 24 that veteran coach Sheedy’s contract would not be renewed.

Knights has beaten a clutch of high-profile candidates for the job, including former Melbourne coach Neale Daniher and former Essendon defender Damien Hardwick.

West Coast assistant Peter Sumich was told this week his application for the job had been unsuccessful.
Geelong coach Mark ‘Bomber’ Thompson, a 206-game veteran with Essendon, was also believed to have been in the running.
A former Richmond captain, Knights played 279 games for the Tigers before retiring in 2002 and moving immediately into coaching.

He was head senior coach role at SANFL club Port Adelaide before joining Essendon in 2004.
Knights impressed as coach of the club’s VFL side, the Bendigo Bombers, and

I thought April 1st was at the start of the football season not the end.

I don't think they'd sign Knights up to a 3 year deal as a smokescreen.

didn't do that much with port when here, & only going with what i saw i'd say he wont last the 3 years, then maybe hird would take over

All I can say is that I hope hes improved since he left the Magpies...otherwise the Bombers will be a laughing stock.
