As reported in the Herald
KEVIN Sheedy wants retired Essendon captain James Hird to replace him as coach at Windy Hill next season and says he should be paid $1 million to do the job.
Million dollar man?: Kevin Sheedy says James Hird should be paid a million dollars to coach the Bombers.
Sheedy, who ended his 27-season stint as coach on Sunday, yesterday floated the idea of appointing Hird for 12 months to help ease tensions at the club and delight fans.

Just wait until his new 'ambassador of the game' role kicks in ..... he will have a comment on everything!
At least then he will have his Bombers hat off and hopefully will stop trying to sway the Essendon Board with his public comments on what he thinks should happen at the club. He was spruiking for Neale Daniher as the next head coach for a long time this season.

to suggest that they should pay Hird $1m, to coach the Bombers, just to appease the fans in bordering on "Mental"
Appoint the right coach and win footy games, this will appease the fans

Kevin Sheedy is one of the greatest coaches I will ever see.
Whatever the great man says or endorses will have merit.
He creates plots and is a man of great distinction.

Sheedy can be a bit off tap at times but has been around footy for a long time and what he says and does works alot of the time but this seems a bit queer. Hird would probably make a good coach but i think would need to do his time as an assistant first. That is if he even wants to coach

Agree with the last two posts ... No doubt with the off the wall nature of his idea's some are bound to die rather than fly, but he has a pretty good strike rate and I reckon it's a big call to suggest he's lost the plot.

A lot of people who appear to have lost the plot are merely ahead of their time, except for Booney who has just lost the plot heh heh.

Did he even have the plot in the first place?

To clarify, I think Sheedy has a lot to offer the game - I am just questioning why he is using his media profile in this manner to publicly support an individual for the Essendon coaching job.
Sheeds obvioulsy feels compelled to put his 2 cents in the ring about the coaching position next season but is this the right way to go about it?
What does Hirdy think about it?
Does this have anything to do with the '100 signatures' group looking to depose 2 of the Board members at their AGM I wonder???

great success the last 4 years, bottom 4
In my opinion, it has been a long time since Sheedy has been anywhere near innovated, the younger coaches in recent years have left him for dead
Actually, I believe he has gone the other way, he is still coaching 90's football, and has he failed to move on players that were not performing and were his favourites
Given the recent rule changes, all teams were targeting midfielders and runners with early picks, however Sheeds continued to go the other way and loaded up on talls, take a look at the Bombers current list, lack of quality midfielders, plenty of talls, Sheedy has found himself out of step with the game, recent results prove this very fact
Watch this space, watch how many talls that will be offered as trade bait this year from the Bombers
Agree, in the 80' and 90's a master coach was Sheed's, however, more recently, he has made numerous poor decisions, these decisions have led to some very poor results
Back on the Topic. To suggest that a player should move straight from playing to coaching his club is ridiculous, and a reflection that he truely is out of step with the game, however, to suggest that Hird should be offered $1m to do so and only a one year contract, just to appease the fans, this is even more crazy
What's next with Sheeds, the push for the return of the playing coach?

Unfair comments SD
He won a flag earlier this millenuim at the club
ES was considered one of the all time great teams in the AFL in the early part of this century
His side was decimated to a fair degree by the draft as might many superpowers in the future.
In a couple of decades he will be remembered as one of the greatest AFL coaches
SD you are scathing on the last 4 years of his coaching tenure calling him outdated etc
BUT
Most coaches who have been sacked or quit have had some lean years leading up to thier departures, thats the way of life as a coach of a footy team
AND
It took nearly 30 years for Sheeds to fade out, that in itself is an outstanding achievement
I only wish he took over SK and Im sure the Saints would have a flag or 2
He took over a struggling ES all those years ago and made them a super club.

Hird opposes that idea, yet I havent heard what Sheeds thinks of it since it is his job that they are trying to save!

Sheeds was on 5AA last night and he backed off from his comments about Hird - trying to say it was a 'throw-away' line. Not very convincing I wasn't sure afterwards exactly what he thought on the issue.
A golden Sheeds moment was when he was talking about the Melbourne head coach position (before Bailey was appointed) and he said how great an effort it was this year for the Bombers to reach 'double-figures' in the win column, considering where they were in 2006. Sounded like his job application was going south and he thought one last media push would do the trick.
This from the same man who, when he was using to media (again) to lobby to keep his job at Essendon, said all through this season that Essendon had to make the finals or the season would be a failure.
Sheeds, we are all a bit over the 'media Kevin' thing .... stop the lobbying, you have a lot to offer the game in other areas.

Sheeds has just confirmed he is a Marketing genious.
I very much doubt he's serous saying that. It's just another throw away line that gets EVERYONE talking about the Bombers.
Sheeds is the master of media manipulation and generating publicity.

Mal,
I have recognised on many occassions Sheedy's coaching outstanding coaching career, however, I am one of the few that also judge him on current performances, like all other coaches get judged on current performances, it comes with the territory of being a coach
Once again, yes any coach to coach 27 years at one club and to win four premiership is outstanding, some would also argue he should of won 2-3 more
However, the Bombers last four seasons have been very very ordinary, from recruiting to on field performances, Sheedy is like all other coaches, he needs to be held accountable for only winning 21 out of his last 66 games
I am friends with a lot of Bomber die hard supporters, these supporters wanted a change two years ago, their are only a small amount of members calling for the boards head, most recognise it was time for a change, and probably two years too late, this is why they only have 100 signatures out of 50,000 members
lets keep it all in perspective

I nearly agree with you SD
I think the timing was right maybe last year, but definitely this year
Despite 3 years out of the finals, it was nearly worth giving him one last chance this year.
You have been at him for the last 2 seasons, you got your wish

it's not my wish, I could not care less
however, I do like to bring some reality to the debate's, every other coached comes under the microscope, but ofr some reason, people keep judging sheed's on pre 2001, his record and decision making on and off the field in the past 4 years has been very very ordinary, like other coaches he needs to be held accountable
My observations is that Sheed's has been out of step with the game for 4 years now and I have judged him in the same manner I do all other coaches, which is on current performances, not past credits
