The Save Essendon group have gained the 100 member signatures they need to call an emergency meeting to vote out those that they feel have brought the club into disrepute by the sacking of Kevin Sheedy, will be interesting to see how the votes go!
- RETIRED Essendon champion James Hird has called on the group agitating for boardroom change at the AFL club to wait until the Bombers' annual general meeting to voice their concerns.
The Save Essendon Group, made up of fans disgruntled by the way the club hierarchy handled the ousting of long-time coach Kevin Sheedy, has gathered the necessary 100 signatures to force an extraordinary general meeting (EGM).
They intend to use the meeting to ask members to vote on whether chairman Ray Horsburgh and chief executive Peter Jackson should remain in their positions.
But Hird who, like Sheedy, represented the Bombers for the last time against West Coast on Saturday, said the challenge was untimely and went against what had made the club successful.
"The focus and direction now should be to find a new coach, not worrying about boardroom fights," Hird said.
"The reason that Essendon's been so strong is that they have always been able to keep everything in-house and the fact that if there has been differences in the club it's always kept in-house and doesn't get out to the public.
"You just don't want (an EGM), I don't think it's good for the club. I'd prefer this wasn't going on."
Hird said December's annual general meeting would be a more suitable time for concerns about the board to be aired.
"Come election time for the board, which I think is at the end of the year, they can try and get on the board, there's three or two seats up there (for election), and voice their opinion in the appropriate manner."
