WEST Coast is embroiled in a fresh controversy tonight, with star Daniel Kerr and former Eagle Aaron Edwards named as featuring in a police drugs operation.

The ABC tonight reported it had obtained hundreds of hours of police audio surveillance discs.

It broadcast a recording said to be of Kerr talking to a convicted drug dealer and suggesting he ordered quantities of the drug ketamine, which is used for veterinary purposes but can also be a recreational drug.

The recordings, which date back to 2003, come at the end of a terrible week for West Coast, which suspended former captain Ben Cousins indefinitely.

Cousins' father Bryan last night confirmed his son had a substance abuse problem.

The ABC also named Edwards, a former Eagles player now with the Kangaroos, and West Sydney Razorbacks NBL player James Harvey, a former player with the Perth Wildcats, as being caught in the police phone taps.

A West Coast spokesman said the club was unlikely to investigate the matter despite its recent admission it has a drug problem and following the revelations of Cousins' problems.

"The police didn't think it was worth pursuing in 2003, so I don't know what we can do," the spokesman said.

"We have nothing to say. I don't know how serious it is.

"We are not going to react every time someone has a pot shot at one of our players."

Kerr's manager did not return calls.

I suspect the West Coast Illegals are just the tip of the iceberg, and that the AFL should test all players regularly on and off season, and notify the club immediately. Then an automatic penalty of 3 matches for one positive reading, 10 for a second and life for a third should be applied.

While alcohol is a legal drug, and, unlike the other "recreational" drugs of dubious origin, there is a level of safe use, there needs to be similar penalties for being a drunken yob - that sort of behaviour is not tolerated in teachers and doctors for example. If they are going to be paid more than those professionals they can be expected to live up to the standards.

If we don't set standards we are condoning this behaviour becoming the norm, and telling the next generation of kids it is OK to do those things. Then the Mullahs are right in calling Western culture "degenerate".

What do you mean "well said" .....?? Let's not congratulate those sort of posts - they are an embarrassment to the site. Coorong has kicked that one out of bounds on the full and the footy can stay in the crowd, be taken out of the ground, dropped on the road and run over 57 times. Sure, Ben's done the wrong thing and let down a lot of people, but let's not kick him when he is down.
