I agree, also i think the color in general is better than what they have chosen, those who dont follow aussie rules might get on the bandwagon simply because the colors and design etc.

Big difference is that these teams represent the whole state.

Apparently there'll be some sky blue in the away guernsey.

Doubt if colours will have much, if any, impact on fan base. That'll only come through donkey's years and work in the community. Not much love for the Giants beyond the western suburbs.

Can understand the AFL shying away from Western Sydney.

Like they need or want another 'West' team...

I reckon the key will be for them to target larger regional centres out West. Dubbo, Wagga Wagga etc. have a lot of potential IMO.

The Swans have quite obviously targeted the high end market in Sydney (how many actors/musicians profess to love the Swans these days?? FFS), so I reckon the real potential is with the working classes and regionals.

Yeah, Swans support is pretty much limited to the City, Inner-West, North Shore and Eastern Suburbs.

Dunno if many of those actors actually barrack for the Swans? There used to be a Sunday morning team made up of actors called 'The Bangers', which was basically circle work. The actors couldn't actually play for a club in case they got injured or, even worse, got their faces marked.

Stuff-all were Swans supporters but...

From WAToday site:

Williams joins Sheedy at Giants November 26, 2010 - 10:40AM

AFL newcomers Greater Western Sydney have landed another big name, with premiership-winning coach Mark Williams joining Kevin Sheedy as a senior assistant coach.

The former Port Adelaide mentor, who coached under Sheedy at Essendon from 1995-1997, agreed to terms with the Giants for three seasons.

Williams' appointment was confirmed by the club at a media conference this afternoon.

Williams led the Power to the 2004 premiership and took them to another grand final in 2007, but after 11 years in charge his relationship with the club soured in 2010 causing the 52-year-old to step down from his post.

LMAO Australian Rules Football being adopted in Dubbo. I'm a New South Welshman whose family comes from rural NSW and I reckon a lot of blokes out there would sooner barrack for the Poms than attend a footy game and give up their league. Even 40ks South West of Brisbane with it's three recent flags Australian Rules is struggling to exist. Go 5ks further west from the Swich and they don't even know what it is. Yeah, that's the rationale for the team of course but no way will you get those sheep shagging hicks to give up their bum sniffer code.

The Giants only hope is to win a few fans in Sydney itself because I reckon Rural centres won't give a hoot.

I lived in West Sydney and there is no way that they will embrace Aussie Rules there. They are more interested in League, Union and Soccer. This will be the biggest waste of AFL clubs money in the History of the AFL. They will either merge with Sydney or I smell another Fitzroy Brisbane Merger happening.

I have clients over that way (Dubbo, Harden, Young, Cootamundra etc) and over the years when I've caught up with them they are Quick Draw McGraw to bag Aussie rules and promote their league or union .. I reckon you're spot on REB.

Im with your strawb ... i have heaps family over there in the west and i seriously doubt they will get a fan base . Anyone with AFL interests i think are strongly tied to the swans . I know they had a real bad patch there and it wasnt till plugger arrived and there mid nineties emergence to really pick up crowds. Im yet to find a set of goal posts to have a kick at in my time in the western suburbs

I wouldn't write them off too soon. Remember that they have one of the great Aussie Rules thinkers at the helm in Kevin Sheedy. From what I've heard he is intending to draft/recruit a few players from various ethnic backgrounds to not only give them a try but to foster support for GWS within their respective communities. I accept that this is a risk but it might just pay off. Only time will tell.

Fish I have lived there the lebanese prefer league or soccer, the hispanics prefer soccer. Marconi big italian sports club Soccer, the asians who live there prefer soccer. The Australians some soccer but mostly league and union. AFL in Sydney the league isn't the greatest why do you think the swans reserves are in the Canberra league.

What sort of population are we talking about in the GWS area? Edit: found it, 1.85m people. Compared to 1.2m in Adelaide.

I think that's the main attraction rather than what sport the current population follow right now and have done in the past. If you only put teams in areas that supported Aussie rules in the last 20 years we'd still only be in WA, SA and Victoria.

If there's historically no AFL support in that region that's exactly why they are going there! It's there's a next generation of GWS people that will have a local AFL to support if they choose to which is an option the previous generation didn't have so no wonder they aren't into AFL. 25 years ago how much support for AFL was there in Sydney before the Swans started?

All that doesn't mean it will work though but that would be the theory behind the GWS move.

An interesting place.
I was once offered a package around $300K p.a. to work in a western Sydney hospital.
A colleague I checked with in Sydney said, "You would have to be crazy to work there, and, if you do, demand they throw in an armoured Hummer!"
I turned it down, as I did the offer of a job as a head of a medical department in the new medical school in Malawi, when Dr Banda was the dictator there.
