Well that's it, Collingwood exerted enough pressure, that they didn't need all the handballs that go with the modern game. That winning formula could be the turnaround to the trend.

These trends are usually unique to a particular group of players who are able to run a certain game plan

A few years later along comes another team with different types of players and their has to coach comes up with an alternative plan .... and so on

So this could be the start of a new trend or it's just the way Collingwood did it in 2010.

How ironic that Geelong's game plan is now being mentioned in the negative (even if you didn't mean to). 3 years ago they were revolutionizing the game apparently.

You could see all over the AFL how the kick/handball ratio tightened up. West Coast actually started it in 2006, then Geelong perfected it the following season.
Using http://www.afl.has.it as the source, here is the total number of kicks and handball, along with the ratio every season since 1998:

1998 71033 39763 1.79
1999 71957 39449 1.82
2000 74404 41114 1.81
2001 71101 40257 1.77
2002 68001 40646 1.67
2003 68920 40000 1.72
2004 67872 40204 1.69
2005 70977 43599 1.63
2006 76610 48809 1.57
2007 74711 52955 1.41
2008 74019 57302 1.29
2009 72835 65524 1.11
2010 73111 61538 1.19

It wasn't Geelong's game plan to go wide, they were forced wide and used more possessions bringing it up the wings rather than through the centre.

Pretty hard to enforce your game plan when you are under constant pressure through the corridor.

Yeah, it's probably tough to draw grand conclusions based on one dirty night

Now way Bomber Thompson planned out that kick-handball ratio!
