So was the rumour that it was a syndicate member that placed the bets correct? Or have we confirmed these were his bets?

A mate placed the bets for him.

Seems about right then.

Did they say what the specific bets were?

Match fixing for a $12 bet? Please.

If he'd bet $10k on the pies to loose, different story but there is next to zero chance this bet changed anything he did on field.

You can't rule out how he was thinking and how it changed his mindset.

We all know that the amount in question is of no consequence at all.

I thought it was mentioned that he logged on to a mates account for one of the bets

Was 3 games, v Bulldogs in round 4, Essendon in round 6 and St Kilda in round 9. All of them had any time goal kickers (team mates and himself ), possession markets for Collingwood players, Collingwood margins, Collingwood wins.

Two of them he gave a mate cash, one he used his mates device.

The multi-bets included legs on:

Collingwood to win,
Collingwood winning margin,
Stephenson to kick a goal,
Stephenson to kick three or more goals,
Collingwood teammates to kick a goal,
Collingwood teammates to kick two or more goals, and
Collingwood teammates to have in excess of a number of disposals.

On two occasions Stephenson gave cash to a friend to place the bets for him, on one occasion he used the friend's betting account. All bets were unsuccessful.

Why did he self report? How would the AFL have found out about it if he didn't?

Seriously how dumb are some of these blokes?

This stuff, the consequences of drug taking, betting, social media comments is rammed down there throats ad nauseum from the time they start making U/18 development squads and continues whilst they are on AFL lists.

10 games for betting, should get a year for stupidity

Don't get me started on the other resources and supports they get to plan for their eventual end of footy career. The same applies for other elite athletes "who" struggle.

Not saying education and resources prevent people from falling through the cracks but don't say weren't supported through your elite sporting career with respect to coping with the demands of being an "elite" athlete.

*I'll get off my soap-box now*

Because he was made aware that "people" (aka he AFL) were aware and this was the best way to manage this in the softest possible way...

Another AFL manufactured outcome

Yep

AFL knew, Collingwood informed and advised of two possible outcomes (self report or risk it), Collingwood then told Stephensen and said this is what you are going to do and this will be how it is going to be managed

A mate placed the bets for him.

And he placed one using a mates account.

Excuse my ignorance but how would the AFL ever find out!

Dobbed in by the mate seems the only way I can think of

I think it's all a load of frog shit and we're being told a watered down story.

$12 bets, really? We have a 20 year old who is going through a meteoric rise with arguably the biggest AFL club and on a shitload of cash in comparison to what his mates would be on.

It's pretty bloody hard to get caught, there would be many loopholes you could get around, it's very dumb, he was obviously on the verge of getting dobbed in or caught so he's concocted a story to make it not seem as bad.

I hope he does his time on the sideline and then it's put to bed, the bloke seems like a real lad and I love watching him play.

Mate of a mate or mate of his brother who has issues with Stephenson or his family. Social media is all persuasive and loose lips sink ships.

AFL would've found out one way or the other. People love to dob in on footballers

I think this just highlights the hypocrisy of the AFL taking big $$ from betting agencies.

He wins moron of the year award and has probably cost himself a nice pay rise on his next contract

This makes me lol

“Collingwood and the AFL have been locked in discussions over the penalty for young star Jaidyn Stephenson’s betting infringement, with the AFL suggesting a hefty penalty that would rule Stephenson out for most of the season.”

And voila, he is available for finals

If he's been backing Collingwood and himself with goals I'd say he's got that covered already.

Apparently the AFL wanted it to be longer, the suspension that is.

So Eddie negotiated it down of course
