I saw it and it didn't impress me. Even asking it in jest (but not accusing it) was a shocker IMHO.

Wow....Headlands father did not hold back, and he'd want to be careful repeatedly using the word pedophile and Selwood in the same sentence.

1) disgraceful conduct by Selwood- however, it seems par for course with the Eagles atm (fast becoming my most disliked side- watch Judd leave at the end of the year, imo).
2) had someone said that to me, I would've reacted the same was Des did, maybe worse.
3) I hope Selwood gets as many games as Headland, if not 1 more than Des gets.
4) there is no way known that the comment can be justified in any context.

Just to clarify my stance, I was (and am still) divided on the issue ... Whilst I think what Selwood said was way over the top, the question I'd been trying to raise is whether verbal taunts should warrant a punishment of their own (by a system judiciary) ... When Nick Reiwoldt had his shoulder tested out by the Brisbane boys a few years ago, the general consensus was "If you're fit enough to take the field then you're fair game", I'm just trying to work out how something like this stands in the (obviously) vastly different model of football in 2007?

I'm not for one minute condoning Sellwood's comments, if they were levelled toward me in a game I'm not sure how I would react because it never happened, I know that I was able to laugh off some pretty disgusting comments when I played, but I can also confess to having sought retribution for much less - That said, it's easier in the Amateur League where you don't have 15 million camera's to catch you out and you aren't earning a living from it.

And yes Dutchy before you ask again, I have played the game (obviously at a far inferior level though).

Regardless of which penalties are meted out, surely Sellwood should cop some form of natural punishment through his own family and everyday society from the nature of his comments?

CP, I can tell you as a parent, it rates as the lowest of low things that can be said on a footy field.
People could say antyhing about me, my wife or my parents on the footy field and I wouldn't even flinch.
I copped a few illegal hits on the footy field but was very placid and never hit a bloke on the footy field.
BUT if someone had said something like Selwood was alleged to have said I woud have freaked and chased the guy and pommelled the living daylights out of him if I caught him (big if with my speed).
Children are completely off limits when it comes to sledging.

Couldnt agree more Wedgie.

Interestingly though I read Spida Everitts comments in The Age today that he said if the comment was said to him about any of his three daughters, he would of laughed it off. Easy to say when it has not happened to you though.

I agree that I think children are Sacrosanct Wedgie, just can't say with certainty how I would react because it just never happened to me, but I can understand any parent feeling violated by comments that cross the line of acceptability ... I guess unfortunately it always takes a poor incident like this to set the ground rules for the future, will be interesting to see how the AFL deals (or doesn't) with it.

I don't think that is going to happen Headland is staring down the barrel of six weeks as the video evidence is fairly conclusive that he has struck Selwood and he is on two separate charges...

Selwood has only been charged with using insultaing language - if proven he will be unlucky to get more than 2 weeks. Selwood is in a he said they said scenario i.e. his word agaisnt Headlands so it is going to be hard to prove what he said was as maliscious/offensive as what Headland claims it to be.....

What will be interesting based on who goes first is teh outcomes. I.e Headland is pleading provocation, if the tribunal finds that Selwood didn't say those things in the first sitting he is alleged to have said (I'm not sure of teh order), that makes Des' case look weak.

The converse though if headland is found guity under provocation how does that make Selwood's case look??

Tough one for the tribunal.

Can Headland use 'severe provocation' as a defence?Could open up a whole new world for the defence representatives.

Can Selwood be suspended for 'abusive language'? Surley not, content of his comments was out of order,to say the least, but is he the first bloke to have ever crossed a line in a verbal stoush?

I think they should do the what Jacko and the other bloke did, cant remember his name, sort it out in the ring*.

Charging someone with abusive language is a joke, they should charge him with bringing the game into disrepute if the alleged comments were made.
