Brendan McCartney quits as Bulldogs coach

Jk I meant his no previous senior coaching experience at AFL level, not playing.

I hear what you are saying but it sounded like he survived that post season review by the skin if his teeth only and then the Griffin thing tipped it over the edge.

We've seen playing lists turn things around very quickly with the right coach. Hinkley being the best recent example.

Once a coach loses his players there's no hope I reckon. I don't know if clubs these days have time to spend 5 years on a coach to send a message to players who may not play long enough at the club to reap the benefits of the learned message anyway.

Depends what they're selling. And whether the players are high profile.

Completely differant, the players are overwhelmingly on the coaches side.

So given Bulldogs case, is it the right decision? Personally speaking, I agree with someone earlier in this thread. It's the easy option. They had a chance to make a stand and didn't. Now, a new coach coming in will be trying to win the senior players over (whether he likes it or not) and be at the beck and call of them, rather than the other way around. Exhibit A: G McKenna.

In the period of 4 weeks the Bulldogs playing group have consigned themselves to bottom 6 finishing for years to come. The squad offered little in real star quality and lacks genuine KPP at both ends.

In an era where smart recruiting of quality free agents could potentially turn a club around in a matter of months these blokes have ensured anyone with aspirations of greatness simply overlook their program.

Agree there. They have some good kids but thet have potentially lost there captain and now the chance of getting Lonergren as well. With Jones and Cooney being shopped around, it doesn't look good at the moment.

the problem with this is the free agents mostly want to go to the best clubs. the chances they could have had a crack at frawley for instance, were close to zero even though he would have been exactly what they needed and they probably had the cash to do it

This is true, but you get a Monfries, then you get a White and a Polec and then you get a Ryder.

port are and have showed significantly more progress than the dogs though.

look at brisbane in comparison. they look a lot more promising now, even with their mass exodus, and people want to go there.

an established player is virtually never going to a club on the decline, basically the only reason you do that is if you arent getting a game.

Port finished 2012 5/16, sacked a coach, employed a rookie senior coach and Monfries left Essendon to join us.

Nobody saw our 2013 coming and we improved again in 2014. Granted, our list is better than the 'Dogs, but my point is one or two recruits and some improvement all of a sudden makes your club more attractive to players looking to move.

Not only that, the 'Dogs must have cash to throw around.

Its a bit of a fallacy that Free Agents move from the bottom clubs to the top clubs. Frawley is the 1st one to do so.
Goddard and Dal Santo both moved to clubs outside the 8
Franklin moved from top club to the 4th club for more money.
Thomas went from side in the 8 to side out the 8
Anyone else of any significance were trades in which clubs had to give something up ie McEvoy, Lake
Tippet took his chance in the PSD but even he was coming from the 3rd club

goddard and dal santo both jumped a sinking ship for the chance to play finals. Franklin moved to a club who was still a premiership threat. thomas you are correct but there were other factors there.

Add in Pearce and Chaplin from Port. They went via free agency we Port were fairly crap. Frawley is one that really stucks out but hard to argue that the dees lost out that bad.

@Benny, yes Goddard and Dal Santo both jumped a sinking ship but their club was happy for them to do that as evidenced by releasing Dal Santo from contract to become a free agent and at the same time trading out McEvoy. They have a clear stategy to get back up the top as printed recently.
Franklin left the premiers for the 4th side

@stan I forgot about Pearce and Chaplin, yes Pearce went to a top 8 club but not a top 4 club at the time and Chaplin went to a club that had played finals twice in 30 odd years.

Ellis and Young were another 2 that left the premiers for less successful sides.

I dont mind the compensation, i think that is where we are getting the equality as best we can even though that meant only getting pick 19 for Franklin, we were the premiers so its fair enough in a round about way. If you are at the bottom and lose someone of significance you are compensated very well and should get a player at least the equivalent of what you lost.

Lets also not forget that most of the free agents have been restricted so their original clubs had the opportunity to match the offer if they wanted too.

Brendan McCartney has signed with Melbourne as an assistant coach and will become Goodwin's right hand man when he takes over from Roos.

Their off field talent is starting to look good. Macca is a great footy brain and the Dees have done well. Would love to see this club start going somewhere at last because my son barracks for them and I have to sit through some gawdawful matches as a result.
