Read this:
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/afl/more-ne ... 6635544297A TRANSCRIPT of a phone conversation between Adelaide Football Club coach Brenton Sanderson and AFL umpiring chief Jeff Gieschen - about THAT Scott Thompson mark.
GIESCHEN: Hi Sando.
SANDERSON: Hello Jeff. Did you get the email we sent with the video attachments about some umpiring decisions we had here at AAMI Stadium on Saturday?
JG: Yep Sando. Where do you want to start?
BS: Can we get some clarity on the Scott Thompson one when he outmarks David Hale in the last quarter but is penalised ....
JG: What's the problem? Thommo fended off an opponent in a marking contest. Correct call.
BS: Bit soft wasn't it?
JG: I am just reading Law 15.4.5 (d) on marking contests ...
BS: Where is that Jeff?
JG: Page 52 of the book. Want me to read it to you?
BS: Okay, save me looking into the bottom draw of this desk.
JG: It's a free kick if a player "pushes, bumps, blocks, holds an opposition player or deliberately interferes with the arms of an opposition player, who is in the act of marking or attempting to mark the football". Correct decision. We don't get into subjective stuff as soft.
BS: So what do I tell Scott Thompson and my players?
JG: Don't fend off opponents with an open hand like Scotty did. Pretty simple really.
BS: You will hear on the call that Eddie McGuire was not too happy with it either.
JG: Is that Eddie the Collingwood president, the Foxtel commentator or the Channel Ed commentator?
BS: Well, I guess I should get back to the players. I'll get Mark Bickley to go over the other items in the email if that is okay?
JG: Okay. Hey looking at the vision who is the tackling coach at Adelaide? I see at the 11th minute that Richard Tambling let Luke Breust through pretty easily to set Brad Hill in for an easy goal. And in the 16th Richard Douglas did not stop Paul Puopolo before he gave Luke Hodge a walk-in. And in the 20th there was no pressure in the goalsquare so Puopolo could have an easy one. And at the start of the third term Brodie Smith and Brent Reilly missed their tackles on Breust and Jack Gunston ...
BS: Yes, you have made your point Jeff. I wasn't calling to say the umpires cost us the game. I just wanted some clarity so I can tell the players what they can and can't do.
JG: Didn't they watch the DVD we spent all summer preparing at great expense to explain all the rule changes and interpretations?
BS: Jeff, I have to go. Bicks will call you in five.
JG: Make it 10. I just have to answer (Port Adelaide coaching director) Alan Richardson on why the free-kick count at Hobart was 38-15 in North Melbourne's favour. I do like how my boys are rewarding the players who are first in the for the ball ....
Laws of the Game
15.4.5 Prohibited Contact and Payment of Free Kick

(e) pushes, bumps, blocks, holds an opposition player or deliberately interferes with the arms of an opposition player, who is in the act of marking or attempting to mark the football.
