Yep I think thats who GWW was getting at.

He was outstanding for the Roos.

I never rated Nathan Thompson. Was my least favourite player and couldn't stand watching him play. Just something about him.

Perhaps it was moreso Hay who was disappointing at the Roos, but there does seem to be a perception that the Hawks were the big winners out of the deals that saw Thompson and Hay go to NM.

Trade week disasters

Postby The Sleeping Giant » Thu Oct 20, 2011 4:35 pm

Swans were worse than Fremantle early in the piece. Last 10 years they have got a hell of a lot more right than wrong. Seem to always take a player before a draft pick, and hang on to their first rounders.

the thompson trade was a good one for the roos, hawks received picks 10 and 26, they then on traded that pick 10. and received pick 7 and bo nixon. Pick 10 ended up being chris egan and 26 matt little both no longer on AFL lists

North Gain Thompson
and lose 10 and 26

Hawks lose Thompson, 10 and 37

gain Lewis and Little

Yeah fair enough. Although I reckon the Roos would have liked more than 4 seasons out of Thompson.

Nathan Thompson was pretty good for the Roos, never forget this, or JB's call "cop some of that we are heading to the finals!"

Mind you cause of that kick Collingwood got a priority pick, which they used for Dale Thomas...

The value of an early draft pick has gone up in 8 years by the looks.

These days I don't think NM would have to give up picks 10 and 26 for a player in his late 20s like Thompson. In fact, they wouldn't even entertain the idea of using pick 10 like that I reckon. They would negotiate just on pick 26 and probably get him for just that.

Same with West Coast giving up picks 12 and 28 for Stenglein. They wouldn't do that trade today.

Early draft picks definitely more valuable these days, and the whole scouting and drafting process has become a lot more scientific too.

Their first round pick (12 I think) which gives Brisbane 2 in the first round
