Vossy may prove to be worthy of the "worst" list if he keeps it up.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

No doubt. But Pagan did nothing for the Carlton brand. Coached terribly, recruited terribly, just shithouse whilst there.

He was always a North Melbourne man, who knew his time in the game was up and took the easy dollars as his way of having a nice retirement....

what a bunch of crap. Carlton were shithouse under Pagan- period. That doesn't mean he was a shithouse coach - his record at NM proves he was a great coach. Was Blight a great coach ?? How many times did he coach Woodville to the Woodenspoon in the SANFL - yet they call him the messiah ?? Back on the topic, Wayne Schimmelbusch was a bit of a shocker!

Blight - wooden spoon, 1983-85. Finals 1986, 1987. In the 1986 finals Woodville beat Norwood and Port before getting rolled by Glenelg in the Prelim. I rate that as one of the best coaching feats of SA footy of the eighties, perhaps a bit longer even. Woodville were shocking when Blighty took over in 1983 and he got them to 'glamour side' status in the mid eighties. I remember to this day when people started to jump on the Warriors (The Peckers moniker was consigned to history at the end of the dismal 1982 season). It was an exciting time for SA footy.

39,066 for the 1SF!

Whole state got behind the Warriors that year.

Saw a tease of Blight's eccentricity at three-quarter time in the Port v Woodville round nine clash at Footy Park.

Blight, furious the young Port team was doing it easy against his Warriors, embarrassed his players by making them do basic ball drills during the break.

End-to-end kicking and handballing (I think?) in front of the members. Bewildered crowd didn't know what to think. Looking back, it was a sign of things to come.

IIRC, the wheels fell off when Blight announced late in '87 that he was standing down.

Woodville were second with a 12-5 record at the time. Didn't win another game. Bundled out by Glenelg in the Elim...

I wish I was around when the SANFL was pumping. Some of the stories sound awesome, and people always talk fondly of their experiences (as above).

Port 18.18 (126) d. Woodville 8.12 (60)
Crowd: 8189

IIRC, Port kicked away even further in the last quarter.

Woodville turned the tables with a six point win at home in round 18.

And, of course, they also won that famous first-semi by seven points...

I've always lived around the oval and I remember when they won in 1983. There were people kicking footys in Milner Avenue and everyone was happy. People were drinking stubbies in their front lawns with all thos funny looking red and black 'barrell' letter boxes.

Everyone was happy as except me as I was spewing cos the Legs got knocked out in the Prelim! The match at Richmond that year between Norwood and West was a cracker with the Legs getting up in the final minutes. A famous, shall we say 'special' Norwood supporter (Brian) ran accross the oval at the end of the game and headed for the Westies room where I believe he was politely ushered away by a Westies official. Great footy and great memories indeed.

Today's Bulldogs wouldn't have gotten within ten goals of Westies 83 IMO.

Perhaps not the thread - but '84 was my first memories of SANFL footy.

Ebert and co as the team to beat and then *shudder*....it all goes pear shaped.

My memories of the last 80's SANFL footy are pretty cool though.

Quote Kym Dillon in the last quarter of the TV coverage - "You'd pay a hundred dollars to watch football like this". Fast, tough tackling, skilful - a fantastic game of football.
