which I think makes sense- any replay must have a result.

So why is everyone so keen for a replay when we might be in the same position after 4 quarters next week?

because the season is draggin on an extra week as it is, 2 makes it more difficult laughable.

Possibly the same reason they don't keep playing extra time in the Soccer/Football World Cup. It's extra time, then penalty shootout. Why not just play penalty shootout after full time?

A replay, no question. The outstanding spectacle was umpired magnificently, which begs the question. Why can't the game be umpired as it was yesterday all season?
The best umpires are those who don't get noticed and this was the case yesterday with no constant talk or barking directions at players, keep it like that and supporters have no reason for complaints.

If a grand final is drawn at full time, should it be extra time (5 mins each end per team), or a full replay? For what its worth, I vehemently disagree with extra time, and feel it should always be a replay. The right to determine the best team of a full season, IMHO, shouldn't come down to 10 minutes of football at the end of an exhausting game - but what are the thoughts of posters on this?

I can't believe people actually want extra time. Today and next week will be something that I will always remember and something that I will be able tell my kids and grandkids about. It's a unique part of our game that has only happened twice before today - and the victory next week will be one of the most famous in the history of the game.

Why wouldn't you want to be part of that?

Great post ginger, watching the grand final of 77 i never thought id be alive to witness a drawn granny! I can't describe the feeling after the siren yesterday as a neutral fan, let alone a fan of either side or the players! I say leave the replay, this happens once in a blue moon, why change it?

Collingwood fans should probably be thanking the replay anyway for a chance at redemption. IMO 10 more minutes yesterday would have surely brought back the colliwobbles....

Reakon the only reason there's extra-time in the other finals matches is because of the chaos caused by the drawn Collingwood v West Coast qualifying final in 1990.

Threw the rest of the finals series into disarray and severely - and unfairly - disrupted minor premiers Essendon's finals preparations.

Hated it when the FA Cup final ditched the replay in favour of penalties...

You could argue, equally well, that if they just toss a coin to decide it after the first 120 minutes it was won over 121 minutes.

There would have to be a substantial element of sheer luck in 10 minutes only of extra time too.
Perhaps a 5th quarter would make the football skill more dominant.

very true but would have to be split into two halfs therefore taking out any advantage the wind may give. 10 minutes extra time each way would be perfect i think.

They should have introduced a new rule on saturday that if a drawn grandfinal occurs against collingwood then the other team is declared the winner !!!!

Something that everyone asking for extra time has missed is what happens if it's still drawn after this time? More extra time? 5 kicks from 45m out?
Say we take the second option of 5 kicks each. What if both teams get all 5? Do we start the 5 kicks again or play "first player to miss"?
That's a far more ridiculous set of circumstances to have to decide the GF.
So, everone asking for extra time, look at all the scenarios that can happen and come up with a complete answer on what you'd do if they came up.

but if they were to play ET then I like the suggestion that Nathan Brown mentioned on yesterdays footy show about playing an extra 1/4, that makes it more fair rather then 5 minutes i reckon
