Absolutely dreaming if you belive this is true. We didnt play any different type of gameplan in 02 or 03 finals than we did all year in those years.
In 02, the players skills let them down. Not Chocos fault. He cant kick the ball for them. Tredrea kicked 0.3, Primus had a snap from the goalsquare which went out on the full, just about every player that night missed kicks, fumbled, dropped marks. Monty dropped a chest mark on the members wing and watched the ball go out. K Cornes was done HTB whilst trying to get around someone to have a shot at goal. P Burgoynes brain fade in the goalsquare. James kicking to Francou on the outer wing who was 50 metres on his own (literally) and missing him by 15 metres and watching the ball go out. Collingwood were on their game. We werent. Was it a choke? Probably. The players played probably their worst game for the year that night.
In 03 it was just a complete club meltdown involving everyone. The coaching staff and the players. The club had it too easy leading up to the finals and when forced to go an extra gear they couldnt find it. Yes, the coaching staff had/have to take a large portion of the blame for that. That Sydney final was lost in 20 minutes of watching a club completely melt down under the expectation of the supporters and the entire AFL community.
But hey, they got there in the end. Lots of clubs/coaches/players have got to the brink, lost for whatever reason never to get close ever again. They arent the first group to mess up before triumphing and they wont be the last either.
