Port to wear black and white at footy Pk heritage rounds

Talk on the national game

Postby Booney » Thu May 17, 2007 8:32 am

We all know how many times Port Adelaide, under any guise you like has won in the SANFL,we all know how Port Adelaide have won 1 AFL Premiership.

The splitting clubs, splitting history part is bull5hit.For those who are Port Adelaide, born and bred, the truth is we love both clubs/entities/teams with passion. For those of you outside this beloved circle,I understand the fact you have trouble getting your head around it.

When it comes to loving and supporting a club,it comes from the heart. No matter how many pieces of paper may be to the disadvantage of my argument.I know,if in the same situation you would all feel the same about the club you choose to barrack for.

Punky.Hypothetical.

If North had been through the same thing,do you think you would argue for your beliefs,as I do?

Not all Port Adelaide Magpies supports love Port Adelaide Power.

1) Wharf side crew
2) Mate of mine supports Essendon/PAM's

Yes, I know, only 2 examples, but I also don't know every Port supporter, so I say there'd be more.

If North Adelaide say took over North Melbourne's licence (only an example Dutchy  ), & wore Red, White & Green (to avoid clashing with Sydney), played their home games at Footy Park etc, I doubt I would be much interested.
If North Adelaide left the SANFL to join the AFL (not involved in the SANFL in any way, shape or form) I would continue my undying loyalty to them in the AFL.

Neither of these examples mirror what has happened to Port Adelaide. Why use them?

Booney - I think you will find that the SANFL placed a condition on AFL entry that a SANFL side must be maintained. Port proposed to run AFL and SANFL teams from the same administraton but some of the SANFL clubs objected to this on the basis they feared the Magpies would be too strong - this caused the PAMFC to be the new entity with a new board, new CEO etc and in the early days were not allowed to train at Alberton and were required to establish a training base at Ethelton. The Port Club profit distribution being formally split was also a result
I am not sure how people can be so confused, unless they were too young to understand what happened and not aware of all the facts.

That doesn't quite line up with the other explanation. Is PAMFC a new club created 1997 or not?

Not having a go at all .... just trying to understand it. It sounds like 2 clubs in one with PAMFC 'dressed up' as a separate entity to please the other SANFL clubs?

Sorry Gravel, bit touchy 'bout this one.

Yes hondo,in 1997 the club,in it's official naming, of The Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club was represented by a team for the first time. This is because, the Port Adelaide Football Club (official name) had moved it's operations, and the team that represnted it into the AFL.Adopting a new colour scheme, and hence losing,(in my eyes, many others and I understand not all) the 'nickname' of the Magpies .The colours and nickname changed, and I think this is where the argument lies.

What is more important,a 'nickname',a jumper colour,or the competition the club plays in? The CLUB,what the CLUB plays in.

Dont get me wrong,it hurt not being able to take black and white or the Magpies into the AFL,but I,among many others (about 27,000) were willing to accept change, for the sake of progrss. The type of progress that had not been seen by any other metropolitan club that had been awarded a license to enter the AFL at this point in time.Fremantle merged two club together,Brisbane are still the Bears, the Crows and Eagles were created in a summer, the Swans moved to survive.Port Adelaide was a unique situation.

So,to maintain the 'Magpie' in the SANFL,the 'new' club was formed.(The Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club)

As we know, the Magpie,or Cat,or Eagle or Lion is purely, purely a 'nickname'.Many clubs get to be known,by general population as that nickname.

ie: Collingwood are the Magpies,Sydney are the Swans.

Does this make the 'Power' any less Port Adelaide than the 'Magpie" ?

Their on-field nickname is still Port Adelaide Power

And they still don't like shortening it to Port Power

Not sure what you are getting at?

I remember Bucky Cunningham on the radio in the early days clarifying that it was the 'Port Adelaide Football Club' (same as the 'Adelaide Football Club') and their on-field nickname was 'Port Adelaide Power' or just 'The Power'.

For some reason he was very pedantic that it shouldn't be shortened to 'Port Power' but I can't remember the exact reason. Guess it would be like saying 'North Roosters' or 'West Bloods' and they wanted us all to get their name right.

My computer says "Not this sh!t again". And it's only a month old.

Seriously fellas, I am well over giving a crap what a clubs supporters think their heritage is. Boon can believe what he likes and so can any other Port supporter - even if they have 47 different interpretations of the facts.

All I care about are Essendon in the AFL and the Dogs in the SANFL.
