I went to Kangaroos v Bulldogs, Round 22, 1998. Over 70,000 on a Friday night. They were playing for the minor premiership.

People will always come to watch quality.

I see the point you're trying to make - but those were different times. Carey etc.

A good thread Bayman.

With good comments.

A little thought for the Melbourne Doggers here I think.

The Game is played on the Hallowed Melbourne Turf.....

The Famouse MCG.

I see all the Diggers sitting in the stands.....

Watching intensely our Great Game.

Which Teams would they want to see on this GREAT DAY OF REMEMBERANCE?
Smile :)

It's only Money $$$ :)

If you've been in the grand final, chances are you've got players of Carey's ilk in your side. There are great players in all eras.

While we're at it, Collingwood and Melbourne always play on the Queen's Birthday long weekend Monday in June. The draw is a joke.

One of the ex-servicemen they had in the studio before the game was a life member of the Kangaroos....

I'll concede that one.
Not sure what the tradition of playing on this day is all about...

Before anyone starts using the "F" word again please type "Franchising in Australia" and get schooled up on what you are talking about. REB explained to me in another thread that it's used as a criticism at the non-Victorian clubs driven by the green monster because they have stronger finances. If so, at least get your legal terminology right. In Australia, a "franchise" is a business structure used by McDonalds, Subway, Jim's Mowing, etc when one business sells licenses to run identical businesses to othes. In the US, it might be different because teams over there are called "franchises".

Those same people who use that word should also do some research into the non-Football businesses run by Essendon and Collingwood (one of them runs a travel agency) and then explain how those clubs are any less "corporate" than the non-Victorian clubs.

But in this instance, your McDonalds/Subway/Jim's Mowing is the AFL....

Oh ... back on the topic, I don't have any problem with Essendon and Collingwood doing the ANZAC day match. These days, with so much negative publicity about the AFL, it's great to have game in April that gets a crowd almost as big as a grand final with almost as much positive media exposure ... all good for mine.

The Queen's Birthday one is different however and there is no need, IMO, that Collingwood should corner another public holiday game. Maybe it would be better as a grand-final rematch to reward teams that have success on the field rather than those that have the biggest sway with the AFL.

Not really .... a true franchise of the AFL would be an identical business - ie, another Australian Football League. Not an individual club playing IN the comp run by the AFL. It's a technicality really and I don't want to distract a footy thread too much.

dont say I didnt warn ya Bayman!!!

Homdo, Bayman has made an excellent point...why being a SANFL member gives you membership of both the Crows and Power yet no voting rights?

With this theory all MCG members should be counted in Collingwood, Richmond and Melbourne membership figures..

Totally agree McAlmanac ,the fact that both Adelaide clubs insist on 2 Showdowns makes the draw a total joke.
