Great to see :D they were only successful due to the artificial nature of the AFL comp (ie recruiting concessions/salary cap bonuses), not they face the reality of the other 14 clubs (Sydney excluded). I'm looking forwarded to 3 successive wooden spoons to go with the 3 flags :D

the lions wont win a spoom whilst they have a fit J Brown

in regards to your point on the AFL assisting Lions success, it can be argued, how much influence / impact did the AFL have on the lions success

My Question

why don't people have the same level of concerns with Sydney's salary cap relief, people seem to accept that assistance but not what the afl did for Brisbane, then their is the question, Kanga's will receive $9m from the AFL next year, but the governing body of football at the time let fitzroy die with no assistance

I suppose my position is, lets do what is best for the game, ensuring growth in developingh markets and sustainability in current markets, I just think the AFL have done that pretty well in recent years, we have a true National comp which is growing, believe me, we do not want our comp to be managed with the same singled minded approach as the NRL

there was no huge TV deal back in Fitzroy's days and they wanted a second team from SA

If the AFL is raking in the cash surely the clubs deserve to get a slice? all the clubs are getting a min of $6m...

Dutchy I agree, I don't agree that it needs to be an exact playing field in all area's, it needs to be a case by case basis, you need to take in to account what is best for the clubs and for the game

level playing fields are impossible, whilst they play 22 games per year. until each team plays each other home and away (ala EPL) over the whole season nothing can be classed as level. not sure how this happens but believe there is more advantage/disadvanage in the draw than in the money allocated by the AFL.

sorry got off the topic.

Then bring on the salary cap reduction (back to every club's cap), then whats gonna happen then, Simon Black back to the West to play with Dockers or Eagles :P Welcome to the real world of AFL footy Lions :D

On a serious note, there is likely to be about 8 or 9 draftees from Qld this year, i think it would be in the Lions best interests to draft a few Banana benders to keep them in good stead for future years.

Take this with a pinch of salt blokes given a post on another thread stating that at this time of year lots of rumours abound, but I have this second hand from a club official.

For the right offer Essendon will give up #2 pick but it will not be sold cheaply. Publically Essendon will say its not but for the right offer it will be traded and a few preliminary trades have been discussed. Trades have been thrown around but Carlton is the fly in the ointment as unlike last year they are yet to make a decision on who they will take at #1, so trades are dependant on who will be available.

This time last year Murphy had knocked back the F-S with Brisbane and all clubs knew that he was taken at pick 1.

All will be revealed next week I susppose......
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

AFL trade week info
07 October 2006 Herald-Sun

The rules for AFL trade week.

Starts: Monday 10.30am Ends: Friday 2pm

Officials from the 16 clubs will formally meet on Monday at Telstra Dome from 10.30am to 2.45pm.

Trade rules
1. Clubs can trade a player for a player(s) from another club.
2. Clubs can trade a player for a pick(s) from another club.
3. This year, clubs can trade one or more national draft picks for the selections of another club, without a player involved in the swap.

Last year 13 players were traded from eight of the 16 clubs and 18 draft selections also were exchanged.

National Draft: Saturday, November 25.

All clubs must have at least three selections at the national draft, but there is no maximum. As such, any pick beyond Round 3 is dependent on whether clubs delist enough players to have those selections.

However, any traded selection must be used at the draft.

From the Herald Sun

Kelly to stay with Cats
09 October 2006 Herald-Sun

GEELONG will not put midfielder James Kelly on the trade table.

While every club in the competition has inquired about the status of the out-of-favour Cat, Kelly's manager Liam Pickering is adamant he will stay at Skilled Stadium.

"He has two years to run on a three-year contract and I have asked the club several times and they have categorically stated he will not be traded," Pickering said.

Kelly endured a horror season and had several stints in the VFL. He finished in the bottom five of the club's best-and-fairest with just 17 votes. Paul Chapman won the Cats' gong with 462 votes.

Defender Tim Callan is likely to seek a trade while there has been little interest in full-forward Kent Kingsley who quit the club last month.

While the Cats are unlikely to be major players in trade week, they are expected to ask Fremantle about forward Paul Medhurst who they see as a possible replacement for Kingsley.

Craptiser reports

Crows are chasing ex Glenelg youngster Daniel Bell (Melb) anf ex Doggies youngster Jay Nash (Bombers)

Bell could play HB to free Stiffy to move to the midfield while Nash has proven to be a good run with player, both young with their best footy in front of them and would be handy pick ups

From the herald

Trade wrap: Clokes in limbo
10 October 2006 Herald-Sun

COLLINGWOOD brothers Cameron and Jason Cloke had feelers yesterday without a confirmation.

Their father, David, said last night: "There's been some interest from what I've been told . . . but where it goes from here who knows at the moment.

"If nothing does happen in trade week they can go into the national and pre-season drafts."

Essendon has been linked with Jason Cloke.

Milne gets zip

ST KILDA offered up goalsneak Stephen Milne yesterday, but got zip interest.

Dees ready to talk

MELBOURNE is happy to talk turkey about defenders Paul Wheatley and Ryan Ferguson.

Toby up for grabs

TROUBLED Port Adelaide forward Toby Thurstans is up for grabs.

Tigers plan ahead

RICHMOND goalsneak Andrew Krakouer is available as the Tigers try to find room in their salary cap to make a play for Docker Graham Polak.

Dogs duo offer

THE Western Bulldogs have offered up goalsneak Cameron Faulkner and tough midfielder Shane Birss.

Crows eye Bolton

ADELAIDE made it known Hayden Skipworth and Luke Jericho were available for trade and showed some interest in Essendon's Mark Bolton.

Freo wields axe

FREMANTLE axed Daniel Haines from its list after 16 games. The club has also advised Jack Juniper, Joe Krieger and Toby Stribling that they would not have a position on the rookie list for 2007.

Russell walks out

CARLTON youngster Jordan Russell, the No. 9 pick in the 2004 national draft, has joined teammate Bret Thornton and is walking out on the Blues.

The 19-year-old is being lured back to his home state of South Adelaide by Port Adelaide. Russell is out of contract with the Power keen to secure him.

Kelly has been given another opportunity but above the shoulders he is suspect. The workrate isn't good enough and his disposal is inconsistent to say the least. Needs to show a lot more for a player of his talent.

No surprise that there isn't a lot of interest in Kingsley. Expect him to go into the pre season draft as his value is down because he quit the club. I'd expect Kingsley to bob up somewhere in the AFL next season, I've been saying Kingsley at Essendon for quite a while now to a Bomber mate of mine.

Tim Callan was on the outer with coach Thompson earlier in the year but I hope we keep Timmy as he's a bit of a goer. The blokes who need to go are Kouloritis, Gardiner and McCarthy with Riccardi retired and Kingsley out of the picture. The Cats are interested in Bradshaw but the Lions are hell bent on keeping him and will bleed any club dry before they release him.

regards,

REB

Jason Johnson played well the last part of the season from what I read. Surely some decent value to add firepower to a clubs midfield. I wouldnt mind solomon at the crows. He could be used off the bench and play a role like Massie has.

re Jason Johnson, age would be the main concern, 29 next year and starting to be hit with injuries

the Bombers seem to be shopping a few players around, Johnson, Solomon, Bolton, Nash, Laycock
