Port won 4 games by under 10 points ( one the QF over the WCE ) to steal 2nd spot on the ladder

That QF was a get out of jail card as much as anything. Chris Judd plays at 50% and Benny Cousins pings his hammy at a time where WC were on top and we still crawl over the line by 3 pts. Fully fit Judd and cousins plays 4 qtrs and we wouldnt have got within 5 goals.

Cant make excuses but nobody can say we were the 2nd best side that year surely.

BTP, I know you pretend to know a lot about footy, but how can your seriously compare Chris Scott with Matthew Primus? One walks into a top 4 list and the other has a bottom 2 list to manage. Can you seriously say that had Chris Scott taken the Power job, that the Power would be sitting anywhere significantly different to where they are now?

A great list can mask a coaches deficiencies, and I'm not for one minute suggesting Chris Scott isn't a good coach, but had the roles been reversed and Primus was coaching the Cats, I'm sure they'd still be around the pointy end of the ladder.

I believe that Port should have looked outside the club to fill the vacant coaching position, as I believe the Crows should do, and not fall into the fairytale of a club legend leading his former team to glory.

valleys, Boon, 1870, Port were I reckon 4-5th that year. The writing was on the wall after 05 and 06, and now Port are paying the price for trying to achieve beyond their capabilities in 07 rather than underachieve in 07 and accept 07-09 may be ordinary. Of course that goes against everything we want to believe in as football supporters.
Look at West Coast this last decade - quick rises and falls when it is obvious to themselves they are no longer a real contender.
Doesn't pay to compete honestly in the AFL these days.

I wouldnt know about list management well enough to comment. Out of interest though, wouldnt mind knowing the difference in spending between both sides in their football department from 2007-2011.

The 2007 Geelong side had a record 9 players in the All Australian side including the Brownlow medalist. Many people rate that side with the greatest teams of all time. Port had 3 All Australians and the Rising Star. To suggest the lists were similar is lunacy.

The 2007 season was a case of Geelong first and then daylight and then daylight and then daylight and then a bunch of teams around the same mark lining up to get belted on GF day.

The 2007 Geelong side I rate as one of the best of all time. I rate the 2007 Port side as one of the worst sides to make a grand final. Sometimes a few key wins and some luck goes on your side and you find yourself in a GF when you are simply no match for your opponent. Melbourne in 1988 and 2000 come to mind as other examples.

As pointed out, Port were lucky to win their QF and then lucky that another average to good side in NM had similarly risen to the top 4 and had to travel to Adelaide for the prelim final. If ever a GF appearance fell into a team's lap it was Port that year. North Melbourne would have been similarly belted if they made the GF. In hindsight it was a good GF to avoid I reckon. None of this is any disrespect to Geelong. To say they had similar lists at the time is an exaggeration based on the premise that just because you made the GF you must be as good as the other team that made it. Most times that's true. Not that time.

Well, that's how I see it anyway.

Port managed to beat a Hawthorn on the rise in Tasmania after being two goals down in the last ninety seconds of that match. Port managed to defeat Geelong at Skilled Stadium. That hasn't been done since and a Bulldogs side with was 13-0 has played us there since then despite what many say about our Skilled run.

Port also won about 11 of their last 13 matches that season and played some exciting run and gun football in a manner very similar to what Geelong did that year. Even during the first stages of that Grand Final Port were up and about but couldn't nail that first goal which could have lifted their confidence before Geelong got a sniff and went bunta.

To the poster saying Port where 4th-5th that year sorry mate but that's bollocks. They won their Prelim Final by 86 points for a start. West Coast had no fit players so Port where ahead of them and I believe that Port beat the Pies at the G that year so just because they nearly rolled the Cats in the Prelim that doesn't make them better than Port.

People forget just how good Port were in 2007 only because the Cats were better.

Tommy Harley was actually an inaugural Power squad member in '97. Played 1 game and kicked 1 goal, and if my Rainman guernsey number memory is firing on all cylinders, he was allocated guernsey #27.

Yep, that was me REB.
Don't forget other things that fell in Port's lap that year were actually hosting that QF final in the first place. At 3/4 time in the last minor round game WCE were thrashing Essendon which meant there % was ahead of Port's, but Essendon came home with a wet sail to get within a kick or two on the emotion of James Hird's last game.
Also, the ridiculous deliberate call against Wakelin that lead to Adelaide beating Collingwood on the last Friday night minor round game that, IIRC, would have affected the finals.
Plus you mention they won their prelim final by 86 points. So what? Right from the start that game was played with a lack of intensity such that I have never seen at any level of football for a major final

Crows got within a goal a couple of years ago IIRC.

Brisbane and geelong are on par imo regarding respective dominance. If the cats had not of stumbled in 08 they would have surpassed brisbane imo.

I wouldnt talk us down by making the granny. My point is that geelong were streets ahead of the rest of the comp that year and to say that port had a comparative list to the cats that year is far fetched.
