Chad Cornes Retires

Talk on the national game

The piece in the Sunday Mail revealed what people had thought all along. How can a senior player and a coach go weeks without speaking to each other. It appears Primus had ruled him out at the start of the season. Poor form IMO

Agreed!!! Well done to the supporters who stayed till the end....pretty crappy night and massive flogging to boot. I think Port should refund their money for the loyalty, and respect they showed Chad to stay till the end.
Wont hear me say this often....but well done Power supporters!!!!

especially after Chad had done everything possible pre-season to play round 1 and i believe he is still currently in there top 5 players and if he had of been treated better he couldve gone around next year. surely having a player like him and his passion will only benefit the youngsters who can see it first hand in matches. Primus wont last too long.

Absolutely astounded that Primus didnt talk to Chad for a month, how can that happen at any level of footy?

Just confirms many peoples thoughts that Primus is a dud. Pure and simple.

Fair to say Brisbane and Port are in very similar positions list wise, but have a look at Brisbane, they have a fair dinkum crack, at least their fans can walk away happy they gave 100% even if they lose.

I'd say they offered him the Collingwood game in the hope it would bring a few more people through the gate .. They knew they were going to get pole-axed and most supporters would stay away, so anything to help improve numbers.

When they play at Adelaide Oval, the venue and opposition should mean the crowd is a decent one regardless.

So Chad had nothing to do with the situation? You think it doesn't happen at any level of footy, well that surprises me as I thought you knew more about footy clubs. I would bet my bottom dollar it's not the first and wont be the last time a player and coach dont speak for a period of time.

Really pisses me off that people with little or no knowledge fire shots at Primus. Seemingly many people have the answers, so tell me, what was Primus to do with the squad he inherited from Williams that, in all reality, has only 6-10 players of note, 6-10 promising yet unestablished juniors and several complete duds.

I look forward to finally getting the answers to this from people who clearly have them.

I don't think either of the Cornes boys would be easy to coach.

Can you imagine in business that you have a CEO getting paid $400k pa not speaking to one of his team that he interacts with on a daily basis, for over a month? Especially when his sole role is to mentor, teach and coach a group of 40 people?

If you dont think that is strange Im very suprised.

For a guy with that much responsibility and communication being a huge part of his role, why couldnt you have a short chat during that period to see how you player is going mentally and physically? Even if I accept your point that he has little to work with squad wise, surely basic communication with his players is something he could do to positively for the team.

Primus took over a team that played in a Grand Final 2 1/2 years before, didnt he win 6 out of 8 games last year? The players are not giving 100% no matter how you look at it, look at his body language, listen to his press conferences and look at the above example. Things arent adding up...

The players aren't giving 100%. I cant agree more, but where does the players personal pride in their effort become the responsibility of Primus? I think Matty looks like a man who is giving his all and getting little in return. No wonder his body language is poor at the moment. I know for a fact he is very well respected by the off field staff and the players, but the players need to respect their own performances more.

As for not communicating, to use the analergy you have is not comparing apples with apples. A CEO of a business on $400k and the team he runs has nowhere near the passion and issues that the modern day AFL club has.

For instance, if in mid-July that CEO is not happy with the performance of one of his staff he gets rid of them and brings in someone he specifically targeted for the role. Much different to an AFL club.

Not talking to a SENIOR player, who has a mountain of experience, who can also fast track the learning curve for trengove and the like is pretty poor from a senior coach.Seems to me Chad put in a big pre-season and got shafted. Should have played round 1 and then let his performances dictate what happened after that. The younger blokes would walk a bit taller with him in the side also.
If this is an indicator of how he is going to deal with the more experienced players on their list then Port may be in for a couple of long fruitless seasons.

I think it has a lot to do with Primus, one of his key roles is surely getting the players motivated to deliver 100%.

As for the CEO example, agree a coach cant sack a player like a CEO can however thats why its even more important to communicate!!!!

May? MAY? FFS, we've got at least a decade of hurt ahead of us and who knows, could be like many other clubs and be many decades. I dont think it will, however.

I think Chad should have been playing earlier, yes. Perhaps from the start. But, does he get picked ahead of Chaplin? No. Trengove? For the future of Trengove and the club, no. Carlile? With hindsight, yes, but is round 1, no. So he has no key defensive spot.

Does he get picked ahead of Schulz, Westhoff and D.Stewart? Once again, with hindsight, yes, but for round 1,no.

I agree he has been harshly dealt with but think back to round 1 and who would be left out? ( Considering the youth development that was always going to be 2011 for Port )

I would have picked Chad ahead of Chaplin. Its a role Chad has done very well, and he uses the footy! Chaplin hurts you constantly with poor skills and decision making...

No. Chaplin will play Chads former role for the next 6-8 years and needs to be given his spot each and every week.

Dont judge any Port backman on season 2011 too harshly.

Love the way Primus is copping the grief for this, although most who think it's all Primus' fault are Bay supporters. Coincidence that they weren't talking while Chad was running around at Glenelg?
