14 matches and $20k for Shaw with no games at any level for 8 weeks and $10k fine for Maxwell, who informed family of his move forward and on that information they placed bets.

I agree Booney. This is a disgraceful decision.

They Should be banned from the game indefinitely.

Cousins who never failed a drug test admitted to being a drug addict.
Was banned from the game for 12 months.

These guys ahave admitted to giving away inside info which is spefically stated in the AFL players contract NOT TO BE DONE.

And they get an suspended sentence + fine.

WTF ????

UPDATE 4.28pm: HEATH Shaw will not play footy for at least eight weeks after betting on a Collingwood game.

The AFL has confirmed a 14-week ban, with six weeks suspended, along with a fine of $20,000 for breaches of AFL's gambling regulations.

Shaw will be ineligible to play at any level for the next eight matches.

The breach relates to Shaw betting $10 (in a shared $20 bet with a friend) on Nick Maxwell kicking the first goal in the Round 9 match against Adelaide.

Watch the Collingwood press conference LIVE below

Maxwell, known as a defender, started the game in the forward line, but failed to kick a goal.

Three bets were placed on Maxwell to score first goal by members of his family, with stakes totalling $85.

Tabcorp has confirmed that Shaw, his flatmate, and members of Maxwell's family were all recorded on CCTV placing cash bets at TAB venues.

“We have the ability to find the time the bets were placed then go back and review CCTV footage of the venues," a Tabcorp spokesman said.

“We did in this case and identified Heath Shaw with what was later discovered to have been his flatmate, who placed the bet, on the CCTV footage.

“Review of other CCTV footage showed Maxwell’s brother and his wife’s mother also placing bets.

“These were cash bets placed in TAB agencies.”

Maxwell's price for first goal plunged from 100-1 to 25-1.

AFL operations manager Adrian Anderson told a press conference this afternoon Maxwell had no knowledge or intent that information about his starting position would be used for betting purposes.

However, he has been fined $10,000, $5000 of which has been suspended.

Anderson said Shaw had been "open and honest" about the breaches when questioned.

Collingwood responded "quickly and appropriately" and "quickly recognised the seriousness of this matter", according to Anderson.

Shaw put on a $10 bet (which his mate put on), he could have got out of it in a court of law. Decided to plead guilty, good on him for being honest.

Maxwell told his family and a couple of his family members had a bet..... how many times would this have happened? Plenty.

What a storm in a tea cup.

I just traded in Talia for Puopolo. Gives me a ton of cash and avoids a zero. I probably would've done the trade next week anyway so might as well do it now. 6 trades left with only 1 upgrade remaining.

Anyway I can't believe how stupid Shaw is, he's as thick as a brick.

Not sure what is so unbelievable. This is Heath Shaw of the Shaw family who have provided us with such rocket surgeons and Tony, Ray and Reece. Hardly anything to inspire confidence in the potential level of intelligence of other family members. Add to that, Heath has a fair bit of prior form in demonstrating an unsafe level of stupidity. If the guy wasn't good at football he'd likely be either in gaol or on his way there. Absolute moron.

It isn't about the amount of money involved nor the actual information involved and it's significance. It's about protecting the integrity of the sport which is getting more and more difficult. How many of us watch cricket and don't wonder if guys are being fair dinkum or if they are on the take? The AFL found this out and are rightly making an example of Shaw. Yes, he's a simpleton but that shouldn't exclude him from punishment. All players have had the rules drilled into them* so how can anyone feel sorry for him.

Very light penalties. 14 weeks with 6 suspended so he is available for finals. What a joke.

Trengove gets 3 weeks for a good tackle.
Shaw gets 8 weeks for something that has the potential to ruin the integrity of the sport.

Doesn't add up.

As was pointed out on radio, it'll be interesting to see if anything can still come of Tyson Goldsack telling family he was playing up forward in GF replay last year and then family member put money on him for first goal - which he kicked!

Interesting too that you can still play VFL football for - due to AFL suspension -racially vilifying someone but not during AFL suspension for $10 bet.

Are the AFL the biggest hypocrites in the land? Gambling advertising all over the AFL brand, but don't have a $10 bet. Imagine if the racing industry came down as hard on inside information.

Not that i think there is a whole lot of integrity left but i agree with this. Shaw is very lucky he hasn't been given a much harsher penalty.
