I don't think people really understand the leadership qualities of the guy. half back, half forward, guts, full forward. he had it all. he's my number 1 in that lot.
Statistically roo probably should hold the no:1 ranking, but at the end of the day for mine it came down to who was most influential for their side in any situation. Hird for me displayed this. Essendon at their prime (ala 2000) were led superbly by hird, and yes there weren't too may occasions in hirds career where essendon struggled. Tall or small, hird simply tore opposition apart when on song.
Bucks along with vossy and roo are all natural born leaders which was their strength. Each in their own possess unique abilities that made them such a joy to watch. I'll rate bucks as the best skilled by foot i have seen (yes jarman is a bloody good kick but never saw jars dob a goal from outside 50 on the left leg quite like buckley). Vossy and roo were two of the toughest footballers of the modern era, vossy to be a triple premiership captain is an accolade in which wont be equalled for a while and roo, well a feared footballer for supreme hardness and added a brownlow, flag and multiple b&f's and aa's to go with it speaks for itself.
Hard to seperate the four. All terrific players but I ranked them simply by who i enjoyed watching the most, and game changing moments involving hird and bucks appear all too often.
