Gold Coast

Talk on the national game

KARMICHAEL Hunt described his first VFL hitout as a "good start" after kicking two goals in the first quarter and surviving a late hamstring scare.
Hunt came off late in the third term in Gold Coast's 47-point loss to Coburg and didn't return to the field, but shrugged off suggestions he had injured his hamstring.
Speaking on the ABC, the NRL convert said he struggled to run out the game.
"It's not one hamstring, it's just cramping," Hunt said.
"It was the most running I've ever done in any game in my career."
Hunt bagged two goals in the first seven minutes of the game at Craigieburn but went quiet after quarter time as his young Gold Coast team mates struggled to bring the ball forward cleanly.
Starting the game at full forward, Hunt's first input was a chase-from-behind tackle inside 50 just minutes into the game, earning himself a shot on goal.
He sprayed his kick out of bounds on the full, but redeemed himself moments later when he ran onto a handball and into an open goal.
But Coburg opponent Jordan McMahon gave him a shove in the back after the goal was kicked and the umpire didn't hesitate in gifting the former NRL star a second goal with a freekick in the goalsquare.
Hunt's lack of football knowledge showed in the opening seconds of the second quarter when he gave away a 50m penalty for failing to give the ball back to a Coburg opponent after a freekick.
He later gave away another freekick for a late tackle inside Coburg's forward 50 as Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna tried to bring him into the action by pushing him up the ground.
Hunt had no impact in the third term, barely touching theball as the Gold Coast copped a belting, conceding eight unanswered goals.
They were better in the final term with Hunt on the bench, winning the quarter five goals to two but going down 11.10 (76) to 17.21 (123).
"It was a good start for me," Hunt said.
"Obviously there wasn't too many times that I got to touch the Sherrin."
"Finally to be out there on the track with the boys was a good experience.''
Asked what he needed to do to improve, Hunt replied, "train, mate".

I saw footage of his "efforts" on the news. Talk about taking money on false pretences.

Not. I remember a testimonial game for Wally Lewis, and they invited Robert DiPierdomenico to play. He knew nothing about how to play Rugby League, all he knew was what he was taught in Aussie Rules, and that was if the ball was in his area he would keep running. You see Rugby League players standing around when the ball is only 5 metres away from them. Dipper just kept running, making position, and ran in three tries, he almost revolutionised Rugby League that night :)

The League should have sent Port to the Gold Coast and used the concessions to build GWS instead of raiding clubs that actually know what they are doing. According to one website the Power are four million dollars in debt. So here you have a club, millions of dollars in the red that doesn't draw crowds. They are starting to become a new Fitzroy.

Send the Power to the Coast, have one SA team and hands off Gazza. Problem solvered.

i reckon he s only there to be a marketing manager same as the other guy fr sydney...dont be too surprized if they both dont play...remember it was hunts 1st game...can only get better. whether he gets to afl standard is to be seen. being an athlete like he is thers no reason why he cant succeed. only time will tell. they had to spend the big bicckies on thesr guys to convert the other sport....this is my opinion
THE NEW ERA BEGINS.....HIRD AND THOMPSON.....EX CAPTAINS EX CHAMPIONS EX.....cellent choice

i wouldn't mind snaring a couple of goals on debut after a week and half of training in a new sport playing with a bunch of 18 year olds against experienced opponents. can only get better and definately will.

Can understand for publicity getting rugby league players, seen highlights of Karmichael, from what Robert Walls said played at full forward and was absolutely stuffed after 10 minutes.Even if the players arent playing every week when come into AFL the free publicity they are getting the AFL are loving it.Only thing we hope for is they have to be picked for every game like Warwick Capper when he went to Brisbane, and ended up being a disaster.

i think if Hunt was 100% commited to the AFL he wouldnt of went to france to play union he should of done an extra pre season with Gold Coast and play as many games as he could in the VFL so he could fully get up to speed coz the AFL is 10 times better than the VFL and he couldnt even run out a game playing FULL FORWARD!!!! :?

I hope so, His performance on Wednesday in Origin 2 gave me some more hope of him making it in the AFL. He was on fire when it came to the high ball, he took everything. His marking ability is very, very good, plus he is IMO a far better athlete than Hunt. If he does 2 full preseasons it gives him the chance to create a strong aerobic base, develop his kicking and handballing skills, learn the games ins and outs and develop the game awness required to play in the AFL.

Ignoring the fact he was previously contracted for the stint in France.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Are the guernsey they are wearing in the VFL this year the ones they will have in the AFL? If so even Freos is better!

Gazza's not going to sign until the end of the season. That's why it's gone a bit quiet. Most people reckon he'll chase the coin.
