Not everyone can be like Barlow on debut. Adeliade debutants always look out of their depth on debut (I am serious).

Dunno about that NFC- I saw McLeods debut game, & remember the goal he kicked from the boundary line.

I reckon that was his second game, if you mean the Hawthorn game at AAMI on a very, very wet night.

A few very tough opinions on Will Young here. Don't forget, last season was his first year playing against men in SANFL. Michael Barlow had a big season for Werribee and is 21, so has a bit more experience on his side against bigger bodies. Young will improve with patience.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

Slightly pedantic I know but that was McLeod's 2nd game and also 15 years ago. NFC would be referring to more recent times.

Overreaction by everyone here. We'll bounce back.

edit: beaten by CK, I took too long checking my facts.

What is it with people on BF defending Douglas? Guy is a hack of the highest order. 1st round draft pick, 5th year, minimal (if any) improvement during that time. Enough already, drop him.

His first half was ok, looked like our best chance of scoring goals.

What are people doing taking BigFooty seriously????

I'd take Dougie ina heart beat at the bay, but he's too good for the SANFL.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

He should've been up against a tall, their resting ruckman or White. 10 possessions showed he tried to be attacking and provide some run, just looked a bit caught out by the pace of the game and the Swans constant pressure. He's 19, on debut, he's a raw 5th round draft pick who will improve. Settle down on such stupid calls.

Dangerfield best, Mackay 2nd, Petrenko 3rd.

Douglas is useless, as is Hentschel (sorry, but he's done) and Sellar was playing well until injured.

Agree with everthing you have written.

Also Burton has to go. Him and Walker just can't be in the same side together.

Burton is done, I agree. He'll improve (obviously) and will kick a few goals this year but regardless, 2010 must be his last.

As for Walker, perhaps the most disappointingfaspect of today's complete and utter nightmare was Walker. Sounds harsh, but after last week being so impressive I really wanted to see him back it up today and he gave us nothing. Went from looking a millio bucks one week to a really ordinary player the next. The gap between his best and worst is FAR too big.

I think Walker's presence in the forward actually hinders Tippett. I think Hentchel still has something to offer, but as a forward. He should be the second tall in the forward line, rather than Walker. I think Walker can play, but im not sure his style suits the setup Craig is trying to run with. Porps looked short of a run, as did Burton.

I also agree, Douglas must go. He is a ball magnet, but everytime he gets it, the opposition end up with it straight after.

Jury still out for me on Young. I havent seen enough of him in the SANFL to make a judgement but he would need to improve on what he dished up yesterday. The matchup on McGlynn was unfair on him, didnt suit at all.

Dangerfield continues to show what a class act he is and will continue to be, and Petrenko was impressive again.

Only problem with Walker imho is if his NOT kicking goals his not doing anything. His defensive pressure is non exsistent and his amount of assists would be very low as well.

He is great on the lead but rarely takes pack marks and when not on the lead does get out marked alot for a tall forward.

Well, were to start.

First game with the new season tickets, great seats but not much to watch unfortunately!

My thoughts on the game:

- Fair to say opposition sides have worked out a way to clog up Adelaide's run from half back. Besides centre bounces, all players from both teams were in 1 half of the ground for the whole game. 'Half Court' footy, the scourge of football in the 2000's, really has sucked the entertainment value out of the game. Flood half forward/back with numbers, and crowd the centre bounces/throw-ins and you've half beaten Adelaide already.

- There is a way to beat it, as evident in the 2nd half, and that's to run and carry the footy. To take on the tacklers and make a run needs balls though and I think too many of our younger players are too scared of making arses of themselves rather than just putting the head down and having a crack. About 2 mins into the 3rd term Mackay was the first player to go '**** this' and have a run, and it resulted in a goal. Bock got on board as well as the game went on, but everyone else kept stopping and proping when they got the footy, very frustrating. Yeah you might get caught holding the footy or turn it over, but if you want to break the flood you've gotta draw men to you and create some space for others to work into.

- One of our biggest problems yesterday was disposal, particularly by hand. So many handballs were off target and at players feet and by the time a player worked out clean possession there were 4 swans around him to sort him out.

- Very concerned about the old blokes. McLeod was servicable but Edwards looks like he's lost a yard of pace and Burton was horrible. Agree that there is only room for Burton or Walker, not both. Burton should've been with WWT this weekend.

Just a comment on Richard Douglas as well, he worked his arse off yesterday. He didn't have the finish but on effort there were at lest 10 blokes behind him. Don't reckon he deseves such harsh critism really.

Still confident that Adelaide will find their mark in the next couple of rounds. They just need to regain the confidence to run, get some match fitness into a few key players, and clean up their possession and they will be back in business.

If we get to round 6/7 and they are still playing like this then there will be cause for concern, but round 2 is still way to early to be writing the Blackbirds off.

Not a good day for adelaide. But in saying that I have also underestimated Sydney. Picking up the 2 ruckmen, Bradshaw, Kennedy, McGLyn and getting Kennelly back from Ireland is a massive book. Also good to see a local boy in Heath Grundy playing well.

To the game, Rucks were a problem, Mumford and Seaby had an impact. Maric struggled but it was his first hit out for a while. Probably would have been better to look at going in with Maric and Griffen.

Also, McGlyn is an honest footballer but not a superstar but even the most hopeless players will look great if nobody mans them up.

Again the Midfield could not adapt to a Vince been checked out and the fact that they lost a far few taps. Still positives for Adelaide were Bock is starting to get back to his best. McKay is one you can count on, has real dash and is able to break the lines. Also DAngerfield up forward was fantastic, but needs a few more mates.

Most (if not all) of this has been covered already, but some random thoughts on yesterdays game:

- Obviously the Crows skill errors hurt them all day, but particularly early, and particularly easy shots on goal.

- Swans intensity was awesome and their manning up and tackling was exceptional ... It really made the Crows over touch the footy (sidenote: personally can't stand watching any football when handball isn't used as a weapon, but instead as a means of "hot potato(ing)" a ball out of a tackle .. Being a Norwood supporter you see it a lot :? ).

- Yes Douglas gets plenty of it, but the opposition allow him far more space as they know he's the one less likely to hurt them.

- Biggest downfall for the Crows IMHO, was when they didn't have the ball .. They tried to congest play down the lines far too often and left the ever dangerous corridor with an invitation which the Swannies took full use of.

- Craigy probably took a punt on Porplyzia, Burton and Maric, and whilst I don't think he had much choice, it was a rather un-Craig like thing to do ... They should be better for the run(s), but I thought it was interesting he threw them all back in at the same time.

It's not time to burn down AAMI just yet, but the Crows need to address this immediately, because a loss to the D's and I reckon their season is pretty much knackered

I thought the form of Patrenko was a positive for Adelaide in a day of well, not too many of them. Showed real heart after being cleaned up to kick a couple of goals. As for Douglas, his misses were real momentum sappers. If Adelaide had converted more towards the end of the first and the start of the second it could have been all so different.

Of course it is easy to block up the run out of defence when guys like Stiffy, Symes, Stevens and Otten (remember fellas, Ottens plays for us!) are out. When you lose players you don't look as good. It aint rocket surgery. Speaking of requesting a visit from Captain Obvious, Burton should have had his papers stamped a year ago. His legs are gone after spending so many seasons carrying that giant snoz around.

Does it matter? They might make the finals and they might not and on it goes ;)
