The Chardonnay Set is starting to fire up. I can't wait to get on this forum if they lose Friday night. It will be mayhem. It's ok though, because they will all say it was to be expected blah, blah, blah etc.

Imagine if Geelong don't win the flag this year! 3 years up the top for just 1 Premiership after they were declared the greatest team ever not long ago.

The flag was won by default though as the opponent failed to turn up.

I don't think Geelong will win the flag. Collingwood is my tip as much as I hate to say it. That's the difference between myself and the majority of Cows supporters. I'm realistic.

How many Crow fans have declared us montys for the flag exactly?

So you think I am saying that because I am trying to cover my arse? Hardly fella. If we win, fantastic, but our recent form doesn't warrant being good enough to win the Grand Final. That may change in finals, but I honestly cannot see us winning the flag. I'm not going to sit there like every other supporter of their team and call the GF mine like they do. As I said, I am a realist. Maybe everyone else should be too.

A few weeks ago I got howled down in this forum for daring to label the Crows Pretenders. Apparently this sort of comment was misguided because of the pre-season expectations of the playing group so how could the Blackbirds be considered pretenders when they have exceeded these expectations?

So I ignored the 'terrible post' comments from those who had one eye closed and decided not to think about what I was saying. As you win games the expectation of a club rises. Pre-season goals and views are just not relevant once you become rated as a contender.

Now Adelaide is rated as a contender and has been rated a contender ever since Gary Lyon said they were a smokey for the flag. After cleaning up the Blues in impressive style last week now everyone is talking up Adelaide the equal of the top four. I say they are pretenders because their record against the top eight is four wins and seven losses. They simply do not deserve to be ranked up there with the genuine contenders for the flag.

So are they pretenders? To the flag, yes. If they win the flag this year or knock out Geelong, I'll be ordering a couple of Rashers of Bacon to go along with the Egg on my face.

I haven't spoken to any Crow fans who have said we will win the flag! We are almost guaranteed to win it next year, but 09 is not ours.

REB! the way i read his post he gave his reasons and opinion perfectly and it then gave an opportunity to discuss is opinions/reasons for forming his opinion.

The tag 'pretenders' doesn’t sit well with me at all

Each game is a 2 horse race, 1 team wins 1 team looses (or a draw), often the team "tipped" to win, looses.

If this pretender tag is correct then why did the bottom 8 teams continue to play? are they pretenders? why compete at all if that is the case? didn’t St Kilda loose to North Melbourne Didn’t Adelaide beat Collingwood in round1?

I’m not saying Adelaide are certainties or anything like that, but you have to be in it to win it so the top 8 teams are still 'contenders'

Anything can happen in AFL and that’s what makes the game great, so you can stick you 'pretenders' tag where you like

There are contenders and then there are genuine contenders. If the media and some hopeful fans talk them up when they've won 4 out of 11 with no wins over any of the top three sides then I'm sorry pretenders is what you are no matter how much you get talked up by media pundits and fellow Blackbirds fans.

Of course you don't like the term 'pretenders' because that means I don't rate your side, but park the emotions and open yourself to logic. This is not 1998 - lose this week (which you won't) like you did to Melbourne in that first final 11 years ago then you are out on your arse. Since the introduction of the current final eight set up most top four sides hit back from a Qualifying Final loss to appear in the Preliminary Final. Then there is Neil Craig, a man with an impeccable minor round record with a diabolical major round record not just for the Crows but for my beloved Redlegs as well.

I reckon there will be four and twenty two Blackbirds baked by the Pies in the semi final next weekend.

You keep dining out on that one don't you REB? So Neil Craig hasn't learnt anything in 15 years? He is yet to prove you wrong I guess, but I'm confident that one day soon he will. Whether that's in three weeks time or in a year or two we'll wait and see I guess. In his time at the Crows I think the squad at his disposal has been very one dimensional until now which has contributed to that record.

In the end whether others class Adelaide as pretenders or not is of no consequence to me, and I'm sure the club couldn't give 'rat's tossbag' either. All I know is this year they have been a joy to watch for the most part, and the potential of this list (including the coach) has me confident of silverware in the very near future.
