Yep, easily the best game of footy I've ever seen. The game was played at frenzy pace all day (so much for people who think today's game is quicker), 51 goals for the match, the game had everything.

The only people disappointed would have been the Cats fans because they lost the game, but neither team could have played much better.

I have the game on VHS and will be transferring it onto DVD at some stage.

The early-mid 90's final between the Cats and the Bullies which is mostly only remembered for Bill Brownless' winning goal after the siren, was actually an excellent spectacle throughout IIRC.

I was at that one also, it was before the prelim I mentioned but wasn't quite as good as a spectacle and the drama wasn't as high because unlike the GF spot and end of the season that the Prelim carried the QF actually counted for nothing the way the finals were structured. Was great at the time for Billy though.
I still have both games recorded and occasionally pull them out.*

Another good Cats one was Riccardi's 55 metre goal after the siren against Carlton. Loved that win after the little peanut that dived down the other end to cheat and put his team in front.

Playing the reigning premiers on a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon in Perth the Blues faced a major test in their premiership quest and they passed.
Both teams were in terrific form at the time and it was a fierce contest.
In one passage of play Earl Spalding cleaned up Guy McKenna with the best shirtfront I've ever seen.
Dennis Cometti, commentating at the time, said "Earl Spalding has just lost his WA citizenship"

i do remember that game and also rememder wanting to jump thru the tv and get big earl...
another good bump was the roo on dean kemp at footy park.. wasnt as keen to jump the roo though

Atmosphere amazing and close right to the end. Gavin Wanganeen and Roger James outstanding for Port and Nick Reiwoldt outstanding for the Saints.

Correct, I think the Hawks trailed by 64 points at one stage and won the game.

The game that was attributed as being the beginning of the end of Tim Watson's coaching career. I can't remember the player interviewed, but a St Kilda player at the time said that he knew they were in trouble when they led by around 58 points, and players on the bench were laughing and joking about how much would they win by. Apparently Watson never recovered properly from that loss.

The sort of "luck" I don't believe in is this crap people go on about i.e. "We were unlucky because we missed so many shots at goal". That's not luck, that's crap footy, and you deserve to lose.

The sort of "luck" - if you want to call it that - I subscribe to is when you make your own luck, by getting things right, making each post a winner on the day. It's not always possible because sometimes the opposition does it better than you do.

If Liberatore's kick had have been straighter, it would have removed any doubt. He could have made it happen, but he didn't.
