Nup, they wont trade 1. It'll be 3, 20 and Kennedy.

They may not trade it, but i think this is what the Eagles will be pushing for. No deal done 15 minutes before deadline on the Friday, and then Carlton may say "ok we'll give you pick 1 instead of 3" just to get the deal done.

Personally, I don't think I want Judd at the Blues. Yep, fair enough he's an outright champ but our problem over the past "x" years has been our depth. Obviously that's getting better but I don't know how one player is going to dramatically increase our depth, nor solve our backline issues.

I'd prefer to keep 1, 3, 20 and pour efforts into those three players, rather than put all our eggs in one very large basket such as Judd.

I'm prepared to be shot down, but when push comes to shove, if Judd gets injured, we get value off field, but not much on (apart from developing the young guys of course).

Oh, no doubt. They already have been pushing for it. Carlton are in the best position though and I can't see them agreeing to it at all. We need Kreuzer much more than we need a Judd.

my prediction is

Judd will not win another Premiership medal

The money and term Carlton will offer will make it extremely difficult to build a list with depth

Let's remember, in 3 years time, Carlton will have 3 x #1 draft picks, players such as Waite and Stevens to retain...

When you paying one player 1/6th of your salary cap, it gives you little flexibility to build a list and retain players on current market value

This just may assist the AFC in gaining the services of Gibbs down the track

Gadj1973, fair call. I'd like Judd but not at the expense of the club. Judd has stated that he would assist the club in anyway possible re salary.
The money being bandied around is media hype. Carlton haven't told anyone how much they will pay, and Judd hasn't disclosed how much he wants. We will keep pick 1. We will use it on Kreuzer. Pick 3 may go to the Eagles which would be OK considering Judd was a pick three as well.
If Carlton give WCE pick 1, I will be exremely pissed off and would let the club know, by ways on not renewing memberships etc etc. I think that Carlton will use pick 3 and perhaps Kennedy. They are well aware of the situation re depth. They are also well aware of salary cap problems which sydney-dog points out. It will be interesting to see how they go about it, but Swann is one smart man who will not be sold short. He was at Collingwood when the Stevens deal was one so he plays tough...Interesting times abound...

I can't disagree with anything you've put there. It will be very difficult to recruit anyone, let alone keep anyone in 2011 for instance as you say.

I think Judd is doing WCE a favour by selecting Carlton. I said to a mate of mine that I expect him to release a book at the end of his career basically saying that he gave up playing for a top club just to get WCE out of a bind by giving them as best draft picks as possible.

sydney-dog, Judd may not win another, but having him at Carlton brings us a step closer. Time will tell on what sort of impact he can have IF he gets to the Blues. There are plenty of if or nots. If Carlton get Judd I am sure the line of thinking is the future and I am sure they have that in mind. If Judd stayed at WCE what would be your views re them and the salary cap. What about Brown at Brisbane who is supposedly on the same sort of money, as is Pavlich. If the Crows got Pavlich, would've your thoughts been the same?
In three years time Stevo will be 30, as will Scotland and Fev, so they would fall into the Veterans list category.

go back and read my post re Pav, I was against the crows paying Pav $1m per year, I believ in today's salary cap environment, this sort of many is not justified on 1 player

in regards to Brown, he is no getting paid anywhere near to $7.5m for five years

the Navy Blues made a huge mistake at the time with the Kouta contract, the Judd contract will restrict their list management capability even further

sydney-dog, until the ink is dry on the contract no one will know how much Judd is on. $7.5 m is alot of money, but wether the figure is correct is anyones guess. The Kouta contract didn't affect the list IMO as only two blokes that come to mind left Carlton for extra $$$. Hamill & Campo, and we both know how there careers went after they left. If you can shed any light on Kouta's contract affecting other blokes contracts please tell.
We will wait and see how it goes. Time will judge, that is IF Carlton get Judd in the first place...

I think that Carlton will use pick 3 and perhaps Kennedy.

Pick 3 is a certainty, as is pick 20 and a player, make no mistake this would almost certaintly be on the table already. WCE will go hard for the no 1 pick as any club would.

Pick 3 and Kennedy wont be enough and to the poster who suggested just using pick 3 and 20  , this is the best player in Australia and IMO will be as good if not better at Carlton. Yes i know he wants to move back and so on but Nathan Thompson, Hay, Carr, Stenglein, Tarrant all these players have gone for similar deals to what your suggesting.. As Nisbett said this isnt just a good player, he is a champion and will continue to be.

Back to SJABC i dont know if the club will be really keen for Kennedy, they have a player very similar except IMO far better in Mitch Brown who is going to be a very good player for the club. I would prefer the club go after the likes of Simpson or co with pick 3 and 20 (Or another first rounder if Carlton are trading with anyone else.)

I have a feeling this may go deep into trade week.

No one player is worth some much of the teams total, and Judd has reached the point where he is just starting to get the inevitable wear and tear injuries of the modern game. I'd be cautious - buying "stars" very expensively does not build future team harmony.

Surely Carlton would still be feeling the burn of the Koutafides back ended deal and wouldn't be stupid enough (again) to commit their clubs future on the back of one player?

Judd going to Carlton is huge for them, hell they'll get close to his salary in additional bums on seats if he plays regularly next year ... I actually think he compliments their kids beautifully, and this is an excellent step forward for the Blues.

agree 100%.
I also think Carlton are putting all their eggs in 1 basket, which will likely end up in more long-term pain- Kouta anyone?

Can anyone explain from a non Carlton view what the Kouta deal did to the CFC in regard to player retention etc etc. Would be interested in other views.

Nice words CP. The bums on seats is a relevant thing. Carlton had the fifth highest membership this year, behind Adelaide, West Coast, Freo & Collingwood. Not bad for a club that has been on it's ass. Judd will only bring more.

Thankyou =D> =D>

As I've posted earlier, alot of the figures bandied around are pure speculation by the media. I heard Judd say at one stage that 800,000 was enough as he didn't want to damage the clubs chances of retaining players down the track. 800 000 is alot of money but probably worth it.
Considering the cap is going up by supposedly $500 k nest year, Carlton in real terms only have to pay $300 k out of the current cap which is at the minimum, and will not include high earners such as Whitnall, Kouta nor Lappo...

Very good post as it is all speculation as to what he will get and what he has been offered !!!

Every one also thinks they know what he could command and once again that is probably mostly speculation but probably the closest to the $$$ amount !!!

He did mention in his press conference when leaving West Coast he would take less than market value to stay with West Coast if they were the East Coast Eagles !!!

So many speculations but I would embrace him coming to my football club as he is the best footballer in the league - IMO !!!
It is what it is !!!

I don't really think we lost anyone of note due to the salary cap "problems" from Kouta's contract. Most players just drifted away due to clashes with the coach - Murphy, Allan, Campo while others retired when Pagan came on board, Bradley, Hickmott, Ratten, McKay etc. We'd already lost Hamill but that's a decent list of players we've "lost" to other clubs or retirement since 2000.
