I believe there were only four quality team in this years finals - Geelong, West Coast, Collingwood and Adelaide. Port have been very, very lucky - everything has fallen for them in the last 4-5 weeks, incuding now playing the Roos rather than Hawthorn or Collingwood.

Would be interesting to know how many games Port, Hawthorn and Roos won against teams that didn't finish in the top eight last year, and they got to play twice this year.

off the top of my head Roos played Geelong Collingwood WCE Hawks all twice this year

Carlton were the better team on the day but not the year.
As I remember Carlton were 12-10, finished sixth and got killed by Brisbane in the first week of the finals, and the got a home game against West Coast who had finished above them.
They were lucky not to be out of the comp first week.
Essendon's 'choke' is up for debate. I just think Carlton rode their luck in that game.

STK only won 9 in a row in '97.
It also helps that your opponents don't show up in the second half.
Little league sides would have won if if they played in '97&'98.
